Sleds and dogs

Sleds and dogs
Greenlandic sled dogs are no pets, this is a working environment! All dogs are chained except for the puppies and sleddog areas are usually signposted.
Tourists trying to get too near risk being bitten (you'd better have a rabies shot) and often get foul mouthed comments from locals.

Was es alles gibt !

That's a sign we won't see here! We have to respect their customs Gudrun, however beautiful the dogs look. They are enjoying the sunshine and they look well fed. Superb main picture, but I like all three :)

Thanks very much, Rosa! They are half wild and stay outside all year! In summer they get fed less often, because they don't move much.

Great pic, Gudrun! You see similar warnings here about working sheep dogs, usually Great Pyrenees, who tend to assume that anyone or anything is a threat to the sheep and react accordingly!

Many thanks, Steve! Working dogs should be left to do their work, they only follow their master.

Gudrun club has replied to Dida From Augsburg
Besten Dank, Dida!

Gudrun club has replied to Rainer Blankermann club
Danke vielmals, Rainer!

There are a lot of people out there that don't understand the concept of a "working dog". Personally, I have no problem with that unless the animals are mistreated.

A super set of "real life" images Gudrun............by that I mean not the sort of stuff put out to keep the tourists happy. The main image shows the younger dogs happily sleeping in the sunshine and the sleds and other equipment look well used and authentic.

The puppies in the first PIP are very cute looking, but I wouldn't go near them, even if the adult dog is chained up. I like the warning sign in the second PiP, but I would have had no idea what it meant if I'd seen it in isolation.

Nice work!

Gudrun club has replied to Keith Burton club
Thanks a lot, Keith! I guess in Greenlandic communities there's quite a bit of social control so they won't mistreat their dogs. Of course there are also touristic enterprises but that means tourists sitting in the sleds, the dogs only follow the musher:-)

Yes they look cute enough to stroke, especially the puppy. Apparently the breed is under threat of extinction, partly due to the increased use of snowmobiles. That would be such a shame. In the UK there are a couple of groups that offer husky rides. The dogs pull a three-wheeled converted bicycle.
Gudrun club has replied to Amelia club
Thank you so much, Amelia! Yes, sadly snowmobile use and climate change have already reduced their numbers. The breed is being kept pure, no other dogs are allowed to prevent interbreeding. And once a dog is out of Greenland it can never return.
Dogs pulling a bike must look funny- but they like running!

I found these images of the working Greenlander huskies fascinating, Gudrun (and loved the sledge traffic sign). An interesting comparison with our huskies in the Antarctic, as I expected these would have been longer haired and with more colour. www.ipernity.com/doc/tiabunna/24353713/in/album/471761 Ours were mixed breed, but had some Greenland background.

Thank you so much, George! Greenland sled dogs are a different breed from North American huskies. As far as I know mixed breeds are also common in Scandinavia.

I was so focused on the fascinating sleds that I didn't even notice the dogs. :)
A really terrific and excellently composed shot, Gudrun.
The reaction of the locals to all too curious and pushy tourists makes me smile.
Mostly, everybody gets what s/he deserves. ;)

Hi Gudrun
A very nice picture, which I like very much!
We have heard of these dogs.. Apparently they make them stay outside, no shelters, to keep them tough!

Best Wishes, a nice weekend, and stay safe!!
