I've never seen this type of milkweed before - I thought Monarchs only used the "standard" kind!
I've been pleased to see this year how many people have left their milkweed to grow on the edge of their yards for the Monarchs. They are incredible and beautiful butterflies.
Lovely capture of one!

Thanks so much, Deborah! I thought there was only one type of milkweed until I moved to Florida. The type pictured is a non-native species. Florida has a couple of native species of milkweed that are supposed to be even better for the Monarchs. I am living in a rental, so the plant doesn't belong to me. When I move into my own home I will get native milkweed plants for them.

Thank you so much for your comments and stars, my friends! Capturing this butterfly was such a treat! I hadn't seen many Monarchs during the past few years, so to see this one and her sisters was extra special! Here in Florida, there is a movement for all gardeners in the state to plant milkweed in their gardens to support these endangered creatures; it seems to be working, too!

How wonderful that butterfly spread its wings for you! They must have known they were going to be shown off world wide *smile*.

Monarchs, while not the most brilliantly colored butterfly, is my favorite as well. There is something so steady and important about them.

Do you get other butterflies now that you have the milkweed, or does it only draw Monarchs?

Hi Laura, so far it’s only been the monarchs that visit the plant. It is the only plant they eat from. I’m so glad to hear they are your favorites, too!

A beautiful photo of this lovely butterfly. I've seen only one monarch this year and few other insects (and spiders) of any kind. For the last 3 or 4 years, I've seen fewer and fewer every year.

Very nice shot of this butterfly, Val! I'm glad you have the milkweed for them. I planted some in my yard for them and one year, when they were migrating south for the winter, bunches of them stayed overnight in my yard. It was like a Monarch Motel!
