Aurora Borealis

Aurora Borealis
Aurora Borealis (Armonk, New York)—May 11, 2024. A powerful coronal mass ejection (CME) produced an intense geomagnetic storm that produced Auroral displays in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The displays reached areas where Auroras are rarely seen. Final data showed that the responsible solar storm was the second strongest since regular record keeping began in 1932 and only slightly weaker than a November 13, 1960 event.

Superb! We had too much light pollution to see it.

Don Sutherland club has replied to Esther club
That's a shame. It's unfortunate there's so much light pollution around today. Astronomers are increasingly complaining about the light pollution. As excessive lighting wastes energy and aggravates climate change (when generated from the burning of fossil fuels), and adversely impacts bird migrations, the case for policies that seek to limit it is growing stronger.

Great series, Don, the stars being a plus in your superb photos. Edifying and fascinating series, really.
Do you know what impact this intense geomagnetic storm is having on our activity and technologies?
Just for example, can it explain the hiccups that occurred during ipernity's difficult but successful migration to SSL this weekend by our IT team? ;-)

By the way, can we now describe these phenomena as boreal? ;)

The Southern Hemisphere was also impacted. As far as I know, there was some interference with radio broadcasts and satellite functions. Airplane passengers also experienced elevated radiation exposure.

Thanks for the clarification, Don. The impact is therefore not negligible.

I learned that some of the power in South Africa had been knocked out. It's probably going to be a few more weeks before the final data is in to see where this event ranks on the list since regular recordkeeping began in 1932.

You were very luck in NY Don. We were in the perfect place but I gave up on it an hour early and with thick bedroom curtains, missed out. Ah well. A great set of captures here. Well done.

Best Wishes. Herb

Don Sutherland club has replied to Herb Riddle club
I'm sorry to hear that you missed out. It was quite fortunate that there was a brief window between when the clouds departed and the fog rolled in to allow for the viewing. The following two days had overcast skies that would have precluded any view of the Aurora Borealis.

Wow a great set of photos! Unfortunately we were overcast and could only barely make out the aurora if we squinted hard and wanted to believe enough. Still, they are predicting more solar activity so who knows.
