Yellow Violets

Yellow Violets
This plant and some others nearby are an "escape from cultivation", self-seeding from an abandoned flower garden, sprouting on some hard-scrabble dirt patches on a steep rocky slope.

They look like 'Jump up Jacks' to me Wally. Often found in fields.

These are some commercial violet variety, identical to the ones in the abandoned perennial garden near the top of the little cliff where these were growing. The wild ones we called "Johnny Jump-Ups", and they would be a Springtime discovery in grassy forest clearings in the Western Maryland hills where I grew up. Lovely and subtle violet and light lavender petals.
