Stupa of Phra Maha That, Nakhon Si Thammarat พระบ…

The monastery is a remarkable architectural reminder of the artistic virtuosity of the southern Thai architects. The original stupa, where the Buddha relics are housed, was built during the reign of King Si Thammasokarat in 555 A.D. when Nakhon Si Thammarat was first established. The structure is obviously influenced by the Singhalese art. The bell element is an upturned round bowl standing on a rectangular platform and sur round ed by a gallery-in ambulatory called Kamphaeng Kaeo. The space between the wall and the stupa forms a path, normally known as Lan Prataksin, surrounding the relic chedi. At the four corners of the square base stand another four smaller chedi, each housing a Buddha image in its niches. At the top of this chedi is a spherical dew-drop. The stupa at Muang Boran is smaller than the original one at Nakhon Si Thammarat by one-third.

The Garden of Sacred Stupa at Muang Boran is formed by a large group of stupa in var i ous architectural styles, built in different periods from the past to present. The unique characteristics of the stupa displayed here are worth studying and showing the differences and similarities of each style of stupa which differs from one school to another. The important chedi, constructed to house the relic of the Lord Buddha, is rooted from Hinayana Bud dhism beliefs, that had remained with Thai communities for generations. The chedi exhibited here also illustrates the local Thai architectural art initiated in each region.

The Chedi of Phongsali on Phou Fa hill

Quite new built Stupa where the Buddhist believers come to donate with money bills, whiskey bottles, food and sneaks like full packets of potato chips. Phou Fa, or Mountain in the Sky, sits above Phongsali at an altitude of 1,625 m. A path leading from behind the monument to Kaysone heads up and around to the right. At the base of the mountain, a large sign only in Lao points the way. The site is respected because it is believed that a Boddhi tree, like the one Buddha sat under to meditate, was here. The tree on Phou Fa was apparently gold, and one day it simply disappeared.
