Freising, an old episcopal see north of Munich, hasn’t many houses left in a shape as bad as this, but photographers love them.

Freising - Stolpersteine

The pavement in some German towns incorporates so-called Stolpersteine (stumble stones) in front of houses once inhabited by Jewish citizens who would be murdered during the Third Reich. You can walk past them without noticing, but you can also “stumble” over them and be reminded of Germany’s darkest years: a memento of those who were brutally taken from their homes and killed in concentration camps and, at the same time, a warning that such atrocities should never happen again.
