Oostknollendam

In the province of North-Holland there is a local equivalent of the Bavarian rustical building style (an early example of which is our house): it is connected with the river Zaan, and could be described as ... well, see for yourself. In the last decades, Oostknollendam has heartily adopted the Zaan style, which was quite rare when I first came there. So everything you see on this picture is fake –except the car, of course.

Above the entrance of the cemetery. Just in case you wouldn’t know what it is all about.

Standing on the dike along which the small village of Oostknollendam was built. The river Zaan is on the right, but can’t be seen on this picture. Its water is higher than the land behind the dike, so the cemetery is elevated, and on dike level. It is as charming as cemeteries can get: it must be a pleasure to lie buried there.

This small lake reminds of a hole in the dike, many years ago. Hans Brinkers can’t be everywhere, can he?

With no dikes to protect it, this land wouldn’t exist.

My mother-in-law lives in a house on the bank of the Zaan, in the province of North-Holland. I was shooting random pictures of the ships passing by, as suddenly someone, high up in the sky, dropped this duck and made it to the eye-catcher of the photo. No, don’t tell me that bird can actually fly: I won’t believe you.
