The Este Castle in Ferrara

From a strange perspective, it is true, but it presented itself like this from the street café where we used to sip our Camparis before having dinner...

Ferrara Cathedral

A typical “Saluti da Ferrara” shot. Could be sharper, I know, but it was pretty dark, and the camera was hand-held...

Waiting in Ferrara

One of those typical scenes... Robbie’s line firmly wound around my thigh (just in case he’ll detect an enemy earlier than I do). A nap of water (have I told you it was VERY HOT in Ferrara?). Waiting. In this case, we were waiting under the bell tower of Ferrara Cathedral. If I don’t look particularly happy, it must have been because something was missing... A cigar? Ah, wait a minute...

Ferrara was hot 2

Most people have air conditioning, in one way or another; in our hotel, we had a fan.

Ferrara was hot

Not so hot perhaps as Evansville, Indiana, but 35º C/95º F is more than any ol’ hyperborean can bear (without sweating). The hotel, nice enough otherwise, had no airconditioning –perhaps we should have stayed in our car.

I rather like this one. As almost everywhere, you weren’t allowed to smoke or to take dogs inside (“I cani non sono ammessi”), but you can have both at the tables in front of the restaurant, so that’s no real problem.

Ferrara - Toyota Prius

In Italy, we saw about five Toyotas Prius against one Fiat Cinquecento. I trust next year things will be different. It’s a very satisfying experience to drive this car in Italy: fuel consumption, at last, is as low as officially indicated. We filled up ours in Austria, drove 900km through Italy, and filled up again in Austria with more than 4 liters left in the tank (good for another 100km). And I’m not exactly a slow driver (though slower than Werner, of course...). A controversial car, especially in Germany, but it suits us, and has served us well for almost 60,000km.

Robbie making friends in Ferrara

There’s no reason to believe that Robbie recognized the oversize portrayal, but he definitely smelled the pet shop behind it.

Our last day in Ferrara was pretty cool and rather wet. Which didn’t prevent us from having a last Campari at our favorite street cafe near the Este castle. The empty glass is mine –Cora got pear juice (though I’m not sure she preferred it).
