Balance a poem by Clare Lewtas Two weekends ago I discovered that I am pregnant, two blue stripes beacon to change my world forever; a simple prelude to the infinitely complex phenomenon of life. My eyes smile at me in the mirror, with excitement, questions and incredulity, I put my hand on my belly and laugh “am I really going to have a baby?” Me, I, we? Yes. How amazing. How wonderful. Smoking stops, drinking stops, old life stops…life starts, how great it feels to get over my weaknesses, as I am acting instinctively on what's best for our child, our child is, without knowing, prompting what is best for me. Somewhere in time we came to learn the visual iconography and meaning of pregnancy. It is an image that we have come to know and that has become very much a part of our visual language. It expresses femininity in a different and tender way. Beyond raw erotica, a pregnant woman, although still looking very attractive, possibly even considered sexy by some, evokes tenderness and emotion that, like art itself, is representative of creation and all manner of Godliness. Womankind, Eve, Sarah, Mary, all have been represented in art as the matriarchs of our (western) civilization. I take no credit for creating, but rather being the conduit, the messenger, so-to-speak, of these understandings, through my photographic art. I am only responsible for having well observed the art that has passed before me. Having developed an aesthetic that is learned and eventually mimicked by me in the creation of my “original” imagery. The garden of Earthly delights comes to mind. Back by popular demand, Isabella has kindly agreed to disrobe in our garden to the delight, or was it shock of our neighbours. Their curiosity was great when they became aware of our session in the garden and in plain view. With barely perceivable discomfort, Isabella stood her ground as I was snapping away. I particularly enjoyed the contrast of her pink skin against the foliage and the blue trellis in front of the shed. I usually work very hard when I am shooting. Very caught up in the moment and deep in my creative mode. It is only much later that I get to view the results of the shoot, work on the images in Photoshop and can finally sit back and admire the photographs. Writing about them as I do for Flickr brings much to light by way of my feelings and emotions that the photographs convey. I must give a big thank you to my wife Mary Bogdan, who is the gardener and creator of this seemingly wild, ambient, magical location. All the lighting is natural, outdoors daylight.
