Milena — From the Kitchen Sessions

The kitchen sessions were special. This one in particular. I used natural sunlight streaming in through the window. The only fill was the reflecting light from the side of the counter. Not that Milena, needed it, but the light really heightened the sense of softness of her naked skin. Bathed in this light, the contours of her body were brought out in their exquisiteness. Where normally a shot against the bright light would produce a silhouette, in this case it merely brought out the warmth of this lovely model. Her eyes and expression completed this provocative image.

Once gone, what is left is the guilt of animalistic, uncontrolled desire.
Yet again, I have captured an aspect of Milena that is surprising even to me as I observe her expression, both facial as well as physical. The gestural sound of a growl, comes to mind.

Milena's Eyes

Several weeks have passed since the warmth of her gaze fuelled my creative juices. Luckily her inspirational eyes have been captured digitally to be the raw fodder in my possession where I practise my craft and immortalize them for eternity. One can lose oneself in their hypnotic power, never to be the same, ever again. It is the stuff of legends. Although in this fast paced enlightened skeptical age, legends are not so easily made. But one tries just the same. It is the need to leave a legacy after death. Something that we want to be remembered for. Either for its creation or its existence. So I present Milena’s eyes. If you lose your way while staring into them, do try to awaken from your fantasy, eventually. One must not dream their life away.

It’s all starting to feel a bit too much. Flickr, Ipernity, Zivity, Facebook, my blog, my website, YouTube, DailyMotion… where, when will it end? The Internet is such an avalanche of information constantly coming at me and at the same time always beckoning for more content. As a content provider, I have been working hard to create images with praise as the only reward. God knows I have been getting a whole lot of that. More than I have ever imagined that I would. But I have grown tired. The rewards are fulfilling, emotionally, but as an artist, I find that I need greater validation. Perhaps financial reward, of which I see very little through this venue. Thank God for the graphic design career. It is what provides for sustenance. But I also feel responsibility to express myself and to put out a message that I feel is needed in this world of ours. To offer yet another voice that speaks to the conscience of humanity. To strive for the betterment of all. I believe this is the primary responsibility of the artist of today. So I go on to produce and present and exhibit.

My photographic vision, in essence, is one of calm and serenity with intended agitation that would provoke on both a cerebral as well as sexual level. I use soft tones and contrasts in both my colour work as well as the black and white. Rarely harsh lighting with strong shadows. A dream-like atmosphere. Some would say that my models appear to be as if basking in the after glow of ecstasy. So there is a sort of odd tension that is developed between the provocation of desire and the calmness of fulfillment.

I am often asked which one of my models is my favourite. That is probably the easiest question to answer. It is kind of like asking a parent which one of his or her children is his or her favourite. Where I come from, one does not make such a distinction between their children. In the same way, I can’t do it with my models. Wheather I have chosen them or they have chosen me, it was a decision to work together offering one another their trust and opening one’s self to stand naked and vulnerable before the other. Yes, the photographer too, although not naked, is vulnerable during the shooting session. So, really, no, there is no favourite model.
But in the results of the sessions, every so often, there is a shot that stands above the rest. A “shooting star” photograph that I know when I am working on it, that it will get the most views, comments and favourites. Every so often, I have the good fortune of such an image. I know it when it’s there and my viewers, fans and general “Flickr” public know it, see it and delight in it. The comments start pouring in and the appreciation becomes overwhelmingly evident.
I will sometimes hold back on such an image, thinking “let me save it for just the right time.” When is the right time? Right time of day? Week? Month? If I had only one such image, I would just hold on to it forever and never find a good enough time to exhibit it. Thankfully, I believe that there will always be another. In fact releasing one makes it possible for the others to come flowing in. Like water in a sink. You have to drain some out to let fresh water in.
I believe this image is such an image. I am completely convinced that this image will be among my highest rated images. Friday afternoon is a pretty good time to post it. People unwind for the weekend and after a long hard week of work they can go see what’s new on Flickr.

So many behaviours seen daily appear completely acceptable. We as humans have developed a series of what we call "normal" beahviours just because we see them again and again. Can you site something that appears normal, perfectly acceptable and yet with a little bit of thought, realising that it is in fact totally ludicrous? War, patriotism, religion, are just some that come to mind.

Milena Feels Liberated
22 Oct 2008 |

It's a special kind of woman that feels comfortable posing nude or semi-nude for a photographer. Consider her feelings when entering into the model/artist relationship. What are her thoughts and aspirations? Is she seeking fame and fortune? Is she fulfilling a fantasy of glamour? Is she just feeling naughty, knowing that men will look upon her with adoration and desire? Some models have told me that it is a "liberating" feeling to pose nude. I would like to examine the aspect of liberation. It is a rather strange word in this context. It begs the question “liberation from what?” How does posing nude give a woman the sense that she is liberated? I will continue to ponder this as I progress with my work of erotic female photography.
Although there have not been that many, the women who have posed for me have all exhibited what I consider to be extreme strength of character. Independent thinkers, often having experienced life, far beyond what would be considered the norm for their age, they thrive with ambition and drive, in pursuit of some goal or another.
Although I have not yet had an exhibit of these works (except on Flickr), it has been a pleasure to meet them and to collaborate with them on some of the most rewardingly creative experiences of my life.

It’s rather hard to know what will cause a great number of responses to an image posted on the Flickr stream. Those of us who are constantly striving to achieve these responses are also constantly working at discovering different ways of making that happen. In my first year on Flickr, I presented only images that I had been doing up to that time. Work that could be called “documentary photography”. Always within fine art photography.
Where is this going? I am writing about strategies and methods of developing an audience. A market/clientele for my fine art photographs.
I am done feeling guilt for natural desires,
Feelings that are pure and yet, confused
As we are reminded of youth…
The married woman one floor below and across the hall
Her balcony faced my back window.
I loved looking down at her from my room
As she was hanging her laundry on the line
Leaning forward and reaching over the edge
The two top buttons of her house dress undone
Never wearing a brazier (brassiere).
Glancing up, she could see me.
I would pull back not wanting to be seen staring.
She would pretend not to see me looking at her.
If only writing would come to me as easily as photography. Every time I put up a photograph on Flickr without a text, I feel as though I am short changing my viewers.
My wife, Mary tells me I should just write. Whatever comes to my mind for the moment. Just write. She thinks I speak eloquently, so why then not just write as I speak. Oh well. Maybe she is right.

Poetry or prose? What will Milena inspire today?
14 Jan 2008 |
|

|
It started out as a real question I was asking myself. I have been feeling very lazy lately, not writing any texts to go along with my photographs. To be perfectly honest, I find doing the photography, really, quite easy. I don't need to say this, but actually, quite pleasurable. Photographing my models as well as processing the images afterward – all pleasurable activities. Maybe it’s easy because it is pleasurable. Writing about the experience is the hard part. I have to step back and look into the scene as an observer, but all the time being aware of the emotions I am feeling, while photographing and working with my models so that I can write about them. The models and the feelings, that is.
It occurs to me that on a certain level all my models evoke similar emotions in me. I suppose it is because I am the one that casts them and therefore they meet my own aesthetic requirements and sensibilities. Kind of like having the opportunity to create your very own perfect woman from a catalogue. It is rare that a model that I meet will not appeal to me, although it has happened. I still was able to pull out some great shots from the session. As I said earlier, the photography part is easy for me.
But back to my question “Poetry or prose? What will Milena inspire today?” I guess it would just have to be considered as rhetorical. Beauty is always inspiring. So whether one writes words, composes music, paints or photographs, through inspiration, women like Milena have been responsible for much greater beauty on this earth than just their own.
