Vatnajökull near glacier lagoon Fjallsárlón

They say, that it comes, embedded in ice floes, from the Sibirian coast. Mainly it's found on the northern coast of Iceland. This one I found, in addition to three others, on the south-eastern coast in the very near of glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón. Driftwood is one of the most important wood sources in Iceland. It seems, that people can't live anymore from fishing, and so they decided, due to the beautiful surroundings, to invest in tourism. So they are erecting a brandnew hotel very next to the harbour. People's opinions are ambiguous with this project. On the one hand they say, that there's absoulutely no need to have a hotel in the middle of the harbour, on the other hand most of the people understand, that tourism is important for the surviving of the city. They looked a bit sceptical when we approached with our car, because in September the farmers use to bring them down from the highlands, where they had lived during summer, into the stables - the free life is over until next spring.

Elterntier und Jungtier. Im Gegensatz zu den bei uns bekannten Höckerschwänen können die Singschwäne, der Name sagt es schon, durchaus ausdrucksvoll singen. Wenn man allerdings eine größere Kolonie in der Nähe hat, kann das durchaus nerven ;-) In Island ist fast jeder kleine Tümpel von mindestens einem Schwanenpaar bewohnt.
