mejoras

no solamente se necesitan mejoras. se necesita el habito de mejorar. As far as I'm able to translate it: "Not only single improvements are necessary. It must be routine to improve oneself."

Cubans are proud of their sugar mills. Many "welcome signs" include symbols like these three chimneys here.

Ley Helms-Burton

13 Jul 2020 15 9 261
"Cuba's 1996 Freedom and Democratic Solidarity Act" (what a misleading title), also known as the "Helms-Burton Act" was enacted by Bill Clinton in March 1996 with the aim of discouraging foreign investment and internationalizing the Cuban blockade. It's beyond questions against international law. This law codified the regulations of the U.S. economic blockade against Cuba, extended its extraterritorial scope (application to countries other than the one enacted by the law) and establishes the possibility of denying entry to the general directors of international companies (and their families) who have invested in properties "confiscated" after the Castro revolution (Title IV) into U.S. territory. The Act entered into force in March 1996. However, the application of Title III -which gives the right to sue in U.S. territory anyone who deals with goods confiscated from Americans by the Cuban government- has been systematically suspended by the different presidents of the United States until May 2, 2019, the Donald Trump government activated without any limit, the application of Title III of the Helms-Burton Act. This "law" is nothing but terrorism against the people of Cuba. You can find many many publications about it in the internet, almost all of it biased in one or the other direction.

Bienvenidos a Holguín

After Havana, Santiago de Cuba, and Camagüey, Holhuín it is the fourth largest city in Cuba. Population is about 350000. The important brewery "Cervecería Bucanero" is based in the city. It makes three brands of beer, Bucanero, Cristal and Mayabe.

on the road to Moa

Moa is a young industrial town, founded in 1939. Large nickel and cobalt deposits located in the Moa area are exploited in part by a joint venture with the Canadian company Sherritt International. Unfortunately the extensive mining and nickel processing has an impact on the local environment. The soil around the factories has a reddish tint due to the iron ore in the ground. The nickel production is concentrated on the factories "Pedro Soto Alba" and "Ernesto Che Guevara". While the Nickel Processor Plant "Pedro Soto Alba" is a limited liability company between Cuba and Sherritt International Canadian Company, the "Ernesto Che Guevara" belongs to the government enterprise Cubaníquel. As average per year, The "Soto Alba" and "Che Guevara" produce more than 30.000 tons of nickel each. But there is also a large abandoned factory there, which is currently being demolished. While it's strictly forbidden to visit and photograph such facilities, we managed to go in and make some interesting shots.
