Parque Provincial Aconcagua

12 Oct 2021 20 10 195
The whole region's most famous park is Parque Provincial Aconcagua, home of 6962 m tall Cerro Aconcagua, the highest peak outside the Himalayas and a favorite climbing destination. Reaching the summit requires a commitment of at least 13 to 15 days, including acclimatization time. A part of Aconcagua is seen in the far background. The peak to the left is Agua Salada Norte (4375 m), the mountains to the right are above 5000 m. - scanned slide, Minolta X700

I know, I know, many will say, this is nothing but kitsch, but I admit to like it ;-)

This nice welcome sign marks the begin of the most eastern municipiality of Cuba, which is called "Maisí". You can see 3 typical marks for Maisí: An amphora as sign for the indigenous Taíno people, "Polymita brocheri cuestana", a protected colourful endemic snail, and the Lighthouse Punta Maisí at the most eastern tip of Cuba, built around 1860

on the road to Moa

Moa is a young industrial town, founded in 1939. Large nickel and cobalt deposits located in the Moa area are exploited in part by a joint venture with the Canadian company Sherritt International. Unfortunately the extensive mining and nickel processing has an impact on the local environment. The soil around the factories has a reddish tint due to the iron ore in the ground. The nickel production is concentrated on the factories "Pedro Soto Alba" and "Ernesto Che Guevara". While the Nickel Processor Plant "Pedro Soto Alba" is a limited liability company between Cuba and Sherritt International Canadian Company, the "Ernesto Che Guevara" belongs to the government enterprise Cubaníquel. As average per year, The "Soto Alba" and "Che Guevara" produce more than 30.000 tons of nickel each. But there is also a large abandoned factory there, which is currently being demolished. While it's strictly forbidden to visit and photograph such facilities, we managed to go in and make some interesting shots.

Besides the revolutionary billboards almost every district or province has its "welcome sign". I like to see how they are made lovingly.
