It has approximately 3.6 million speakers of its two individual languages, Konkani and Goan Konkani, members of Konkani macrolanguage. Most of the linguists have classified Konkani languages as part of southern group of Indo-Aryan languages, most closely related to Marathi within this group. ... Mahe was a French colony - the size of a large village -on the west coast of India until the 1950s. It was part of the colony of Pondicherry, located on the east coast of India. This multilingual prayer is at the main entrance to the church of St Therese. Note the French inscription.
