Behind the Museum (HFF)
13 Dec 2024 |
|
|
|
Taken behind the Union Station museum in Ogden, Utah.
This is a well-used piece of railway equipment, probably awaiting restoration. (Seems to be self-propelled, but I don't know what kind of engine.) Still has the WMRY railway lettering on it.

Steam Locomotive (HFF)

|
Taken at the Texas Transportation Museum, located in San Antonio.
Their website.
They have some working equipment, and today, they were running a tank locomotive pulling a caboose.
You know this is a "real" rail experience, because as this tank engine passed us, we were covered with smuts.
(Sad news, this tank engine is out of service as of 2021 and needs repairs.)

Steam Locomotive Jupiter (HBM)

|
Operating replica steam locomotive Jupiter at the Promontory Point historical area. This is the site of the "Golden Spike". These locomotives are run every day, out in the morning, and back to the barn in the evening.
The color scheme of the locomotives was designed by a Disney artist.

GG1 in Elkhart (H.A.N.W.E.)

The New York Central Railroad Museum in Elkhart, Indiana, is well worth a visit. They have some excellent equipment outside.
Sadly, this GG1, one of the most stylish locomotives of the 20th century, needs some loving care.
The exterior of these locomotives was artist-designed, the electric locomotives operating for many decades where electric power was available (primarily New York-Boston corridor).

A placard at the Forney Transportation Museum in Denver, Colorado. It lists all of the existing "Big Boy" locomotives, including the unit at the Forney Museum (as of 2015, when we visited).

"Big Boy" 4004 in Cheyenne, Wyoming

This "Big Boy" is in static display in a park in Cheyenne. Just a couple of miles away are the Union Pacific Steam Shops, where another Big Boy #4014 was restored to operating condition, and is maintained by Union Pacific.
This is a wide panorama, click on image to view larger.

4012 Cab at Steamtown
18 Jun 2024 |
|
|
We've managed to see a number of the "Big Boy" steam locomotives. Our visit to Steamtown (Scranton, Pennsylvania) adds yet another, #4012.
The locomotive is being maintained quite nicely. You can climb up into the cab, but there are barriers to prevent you from trying to start it up.

B-2 (and seats, HBM)

The Air Force Museum in Dayton is amazing, but very large. There are actually few places to sit and rest our weary feet.
These seats are set up near the B-2 bomber.

Radios
28 Sep 2023 |

|
There is a barn at the Fitz Roy estancia, just full of antique items. It appears that they never threw anything away.
Here are some radios. When you live very far from civilization, the radio becomes an important communication device.
We took a tour from Punta Arenas, Chile, to this estancia, among other stops. To get to the farm, our full tour bus was loaded onto an already-laden ferry, and carried over a narrow arm of the ocean. Quite an experience.

Lahaina, Maui, Hawai'i, Baldwin Home Museum Ground…

The front area of the Baldwin Home Museum in Lahaina. We were there around the holidays, which explains the Christmas decorations on the street light poles.
Looks like a nice place to sit and enjoy the endless parade.
(UPDATE 2023: I fear that these buildings are now just smoking ruins.)

Rusty Bell (BW)

Taken at the Utah State Railroad Museum in Ogden, Utah, in 2014.
This is the bell on a diesel locomotive. They had to put the bells lower down on these, unlike steam locomotives where the bell was right on the front on top.
I converted the image to monochrome using GIMP.
