Statues on the Roof of Palac Koruna, Prague, CZ, 2…

Palac Koruna is a very elaborate art deco (basically) building at the Mustek end of Vaclavske Namesti. I'm not sure if an architecture historian would agree with the term "art deco," though, as the building is a bit older than is generally associated with the term, and is even a bit too ornate to fit the mold. It even has these statues hidden behind the tower, meaning that they're only visible from the air, or from the other side on the top floor, as there's a glassed-in courtyard that you can shoot across. This was another test shot for the Contina, though, as the ideal camera for this shot would be an SLR with a zoom lens.

Most of the rooms in the Prezidentska Palac are very large, and this means that, today as historically, it is often used for major state gatherings and functions. Generally, you have to arrange tours, as security rules require it. We luckily had the right connections since we were students at the university, which is still a state institution.

I like this Karluv Most shot even better than the one above, I would venture that this is probably my best, second best, or third best Prague shot on Facebook, and now you can see it here. :-)

This is one my favorite all-time Prague shots, taken, of course, on the Karluv Most. That's St. Vitus Cathedral and the Hradcany in the distance, of course.

Here's a larger view of the large waiting room in which the statue insert in Pictures 2 and 3 was placed.

Praha Hlavni Nadrazi, while much-maligned today because of its dilapidation, was nevertheless originally built in a spectacularly monumental style, in keeping with other big city stations of the time. Much of it is still there, too, but above street level and off to the side of the tracks, where there are offices. This part, though, is open to the public, as it houses the landmark Fantova Kavarna coffeehouse.

In spite of Fantova Kavarna being open to the public, this shot illustrates how difficult it can be to get the right range. I actually shot this from the pedestrian tunnel that leads to the tracks, as there's a huge hole in the ceiling to remind you of what's upstairs. That's understandable, since the tunnel system under the station used by most passengers is more or less universally considered ugly, whereas Fantova Kavarna, flaking plaster notwithstanding, is a whole other story.
Olomoucky Orloj (repost), Olomouc, Moravia (CZ), 2…

I've posted, deleted, and reposted this photo many times, always trying to get someone to look at it. For some bizarre reason, it's one of my most unpopular photos, but here I go again.....Astronomical clocks can be found in many towns in the Czech Republic, and two of the most notable are in Prague and Olomouc. An astronomical clock is called an "Orloj" in Czech, so this one, in Olomouc, is called the "Olomoucky Orloj." This one dates to 1953, replacing an earlier one, and being built under Communism, it glorifies workers, scientists, and ordinary citizens instead of Monarchs, religious leaders, and such. The music which plays when it chimes sounds like the Internationale to me, although if someone knows for sure that would be great.
