This is another entrance to the palace. I liked the path through the garden, although I didn't enter as it's private property (although tours are done, if I'm not mistaken).

This is the portal to one of the entrances to the palace. The Baroque style is evident, in line with its era.

This is the historical marker for the Schwartzenberg Palace, built by the Schwartenberg family (if I'm not mistaken) between 1697-1704. The Schwartzenbergs are Austrian, but the Czech MP, Karel Schwartzenberg, is one of them. This isn't so surprising given the historical connection of the Hapsburg Monarchy, which ruled Bohemia, to a greater or lesser degree, from 1526 to 1918.

The current Zwinger Palace was constructed in 1710-1728 by Augustus the Strong, using the foundations of an old armory. It was originally a stable, or "Zwinger," not for horses, but for artillery, hence the name. Although mostly destroyed during the bombing of Dresden in 1945, it was reconstructed after the war and is now a major tourist attraction.

I took this because I liked the carvings on the building, as well as the composition when taken from this perspective.

This is of the same part of the Zwinger as in Picture 2, only I was standing much further back in this one.

This is the largest of the Zwinger buildings, and the least ornate, although still including here, of course. :-)

The Royal Castle in Budapest is really more of a palace nowadays, having been rebuilt in the late 19th Century.

This shot gives you a better idea of the palatial nature of the Royal Castle in Budapest. It was clearly built more as a residence than as a fortress.

In spite of its residential nature, the Royal Castle in Budapest does nevertheless have a parapet, although it's more for sightseeing than anything else.
