Here's a shot that I like better than Picture 5, although I chose to upload both anyway.

Here's a lucky shot that I got of my ICE (the one my friend was impressed by) pulling in.

Here's one of the newer Classes of ICE introduced around the time of my first visit to Germany in 1998. At the time, the Class were still in testing, but now they have been in service for many years. Although there isn't a high-speed line in Germany yet that can accommodate their full 330Km/h (205 m.p.h.) cruising speed, they still get to run quite fast, up to at least 250Km/h on most high-speed lines.

Incredible as it may seem now, the original Class 401 are already over 20 years old and counting, and showing little of their age. I got to meet up with some old American friends on this trip, including one old hot rodder who was suitably impressed, not to mention surprised at our train's age. "It works," he said.

Also called the ICT for its tilting mechanism, this class of ICE can be spotted by its stubbier nose than the similar (and contemporary) Class 403.

This was a less blurred and distorted shot of a Pendolino passing us, but I still didn't get the number because the coupler cover was open, and this is normally where the number is.

This is a crop of the previous shot, illustrating the advantages of film, although I feel like I could have focused it better. I'm a little bit skeptical about the adjustment of the eyepiece of my camera (it adjusts to your glasses prescription, and I don't know how to set it 100% right).

This is a shot I got from the old bridge on the old Linka 011. Obviously, when I saw the chance for a shot of the Pendolino I didn't turn it down.

I took this at the start of a trip I took with my aforementioned friend to Hradec Kralove. We had decided on it more or less on a whim, almost cancelling the trip because of massive flooding the previous day, which was still being cleaned up. Ultimately, although Moravia was badly damaged, Bohemia escaped well enough so that trains were running on the 26th of June, when we left. This wasn't our train, though, as Pendolinos to the East run via Pardubice, rather than Hradec, and in any case this one was for Vienna (Wien). This was the first time I had seen one in Hlavni Nadrazi, so me and my friend took several minutes to get photos and video of it. Luckily, I also had my real camera again, since I decided the occasion was worth adding to the backlog of film.

It took this shot for the same reason as the last one. I saw the opportunity, and I took it. I also don't photograph the Pendolino everyday, so that was another reason.

I finally caught up to the Czech version of the Fiat Pendolino a week or two ago, and here's my first photo!! Amazingly, it came out reasonably well, in spite of the 100 ISO film (unusual for me) and the low light. I didn't expect it to, so I ran down the platform to the lead end, rested the camera on a bench, and took a second shot. It didn't come out. :-) I guess it's good that I took this one on faith, then. :-) Hopefully I'll have more of these in the foreseeable future, but not soon, as Pendolinos are rare in this country. Enjoy.

Services from London King's Cross to Leeds, while not as long a haul as services to Newcastle and Edinburgh, are nevertheless run by GNER with Intercity 225 high-speed trainsets. 225s, while matched sets, are not actually EMUs, but loco-hauled, and all of the locomotives but one (89001 "Avocet") are Class 91 electrics, although sometimes a Class 90 will substitute on the Leeds services since they're far from as fast as the Newcastle and Edinburgh services. Most of the Class 91s have names, this one being #91106 "East Lothian."

Just as the sunset illuminated other trains and objects, it also had the chance to illuminate the Pendolino, which showed up exactly when I was ready for it. I heard the announcement, ran a few meters, composed the shot, and clicked.
