Old Mercedes Tour Bus, Dresden, Saxony, Germany, 2…

08 Dec 2012 245
Apparently using older buses for city tours isn't something unique to Britain. In addition to this Mercedes, there was also a 40-50-year old MAN in service.

Postal Service Bus in Chur Bus Station, Chur, Ples…

30 Sep 2012 229
I don't know too much about this bus, other than that it appears to be operated by the Swiss postal service. It's a passenger bus, in spite of the operator, so it must be fairly unusual in today's world. Obviously, in the 18th and 19th Centuries it was possible to ride on mail coaches, but to see modern-day motorcoaches hauling primarily passengers would have to be unusual. Does anybody know much about these? The station I photographed this one in is adjacent to the Chur trains station, so close, in fact, that it's almost the same facility (and perhaps could be considered such).

Skoda Hybrid Bus in Marianske Lazne, Picture 3, Cr…

Here's a front view of the bus, revealing the Skoda logo above the bumper. The trolley pantograph is fully retracted here, and the bus is starting to pull away under diesel power.

Skoda Hybrid Bus, Cropped Version, Marianske Lazne…

21 Mar 2012 259
This is, surprisingly enough, a hybrid bus, for lack of a better term. It can run off of catenary like a trolleybus, or on diesel like a conventional bus. It looks like a Karosa, but it's actually built by Skoda, a traditional trolleybus maker. Here you can see it retracting its trolley pantograph.

Old CSAD Bus at Husinecka, Prague, CZ, 2010

04 Aug 2010 389
I know very little about this bus other than that...well...it's vintage and running charters. Is it a Tatra? Does anybody know?

Streetlights in Haje, Prague, CZ, 2010

16 May 2010 351
This was another shot taken in Haje. There was a certain about of snow still coming down when I took this, creating a slight haze.

Hradec Kralove Hlavni Nadrazi Trolleybus Stop, Hra…

05 Aug 2009 371
Here's a shot of the bus terminal that I managed to get in a shadow. As you can see, many of Hradec Kralove's buses are trolleybuses.

Busboard in Hradec Kralove, Kralovehradecky kraj,…

05 Aug 2009 307
This busboard wasn't outside Hradec Kralove Hlavni Nadrazi on my last visit several years ago, and for that matter, the whole bus terminal was so freshly rebuilt and maintained this time that its whiteness was giving me some exposure difficulties with the camera.

DPP Bus #7226 at Cercany, Bohemia (CZ), 2009

27 Jul 2009 306
In spite of the diesel locomotives rumbling around the yard on this particular day, the regular local trains from Prague were mostly being terminated in Senohraby, with replacement buses connecting passengers to points south. Most of the buses were old Karosas like this one, borrowed from DPP. Technically, Cercany isn't in DPP's territory, although it is in Zone 2 of PID. I don't really understand DPP's numbering system for buses. I have to assume it's seperate from the trams when it comes to vehicle numbers and not service numbers, as technially 7226 should be a Tatra T3SU tram if the system were universal.

Old Leyland Double Decker Bus, Picture 2, Holesovi…

02 Jun 2009 251
This was one of those strange surprises that Prague has if you look around. Not only is this a real British double decker bus (albeit not an AEC Routemaster), but it's even still got its British route number and destination boards. If anybody knows the exact year and model (Thrash Merchant, do you know?), that would be great.

First Snow, Sidliste Haje, Prague, CZ, October 200…

16 Apr 2008 320
The snows came to Prague relatively early in 2007, almost coinciding with Halloween, but it was wet snow, and while the snowstorms continued into November, particularly in the mountains in other parts of the Czech Republic, the winter of 2007-2008 was abnormally warm, with snow only in October, November, and the end of March, at least in Prague. This shot in Sidliste Haje, incidentally also gives a perspective on Haje that I haven't succeeded in giving before, looking north, with not only Communist-era "Panelak" apartment blocks, but also a Communist-era Karosa bus. The Metro station is hidden off to the right of the photo.

DPP #494, Prague Public Transport Museum, Stresovi…

07 Dec 2007 1 310
#494 is not a tram, of course, but a 1959 Skoda 8 Tr. Trolejbus, or Trolleybus to English speakers. Many Czech cities still use Trolleybuses, although they're much newer, of course. These cities include Plzen, Hradec Kralove, Ostrava, Zlin, and Brno, and there may be a few more which I'm forgetting. In any case, this bus is now definitely historic, not only because of its age but because DPP stopped running trolleybuses in 1972.

Wrong Bus, 1995 NRHS National Convention, Pocono S…

16 Nov 2007 564
This was....the wrong bus. No, actually that German tourist trying out the driver's seat was fiddling with the crank that changes the headboard. :-) This was actually the bus that was supposed to take us back to the hotel in Lancaster after the Milwaukee Road #261 trip during the 1995 NRHS Convention. That's why I've put a bus photo in my rail photo archives, and the only reason. :-)

Kavka Long-Distance Bus, Hradcanska, Prague, CZ, 2…

08 Nov 2007 349
I took this at the Hradcanska bus/tram/metro station in Prague. The bus is a Karosa, if I'm not mistaken, but instead of working for DPP it works for Kavka, an intercity carrier. I really like the sky in this shot, which is largely the result of a mistake, as I underexposed this shot pretty badly.

Skoda Trolejbus, Hradec Kralove, Kralovsky Kraj, E…

01 Sep 2007 381
Here's one of the Hradec Kralove transit authority's trolejbuses (trolleybuses, etc. in English). They're quiet, clean, and pretty reliable, although the routes tend to circle the city centre rather than going straight in, and they're about as rough-riding and uncomfortable as any other buses. Cool idea, though, and practical.

Fall Colors, Kacerov, Prague, CZ, 2006

01 Sep 2007 357
This scene is right between Kacerov Metro (Station) and Restaurant Kacerov, in the bus station above the Metro, surprisingly.

Rainbow, Nadrazi Branik, Prague, CZ, 2006

01 Sep 2007 348
This is from the bus and tram terminal of Nadrazi Branik, taken a few minutes after the Flying Leaves picture, as the rainstorm was fast, furious, and short, and followed by bright sunlight. Perfect conditions for a rainbow.

"Horrible Holesovice???," Nadrazi Holesovice, Hole…

01 Sep 2007 482
This is another black and white conversion from my Fujicolor 100 in my Lomo 135. I saw this scene and thought of how it perfectly represented the Communist ugliness of much of Prague's outskirts, although in honesty American capitalists are at least as good at making suburbs look repulsive. Actually, though, Nadrazi Holesovice, Prague's international train station (it's bus and Metro terminal is in the foreground, dedicated, appropriately, in 1984), is one of the best-run in Prague, and maybe the very best. Although, not being Czech, and can't speak for all Czechs, I do know that people come from other parts of Prague just to make reservations and get railcards here because it's less of a nuisance than at the other Prague stations.
