U Pinkasu, Prague, CZ, 2012

23 Feb 2013 201
The U Pinkasu hospoda (pub) was the first hospoda to be officially a "Plzenska Restaurace," sponsored by the Plzensky Prazdroj (Pilsener Urquell) brewery. I think the building is a bit older, though.

This is later, at the Carpenter's Arms. I tried this shot with and without a flash, and this is the one without.

This was the first pub on the hiking route, but we continued in order to save daylight. We returned later.

Novomestsky Pivo (Beer), Novomestsky Pivovar, Nove…

This is the end product of the Novomestsky Pivovar, which although a brewpub literally translates to "New Town Brewery." This beer, while light (in the Czech sense), is nevertheless cloudy due to its being unfiltered. It's rich in taste as well, which is typical of its also being unpasteurized. Pasteurization of beer is more to increase shelf life than to improve food safety, so although its generally safe to drink, it isn't economical to bottle it usually, so a brewpub or brewery is usually the only place you can drink it.

This is one of the fermentation vats at the Novomestsky Pivovar, a brewpub on Vodickova in Prague. Most of the brewpub is located underground in medieval cellars thought to have long been connected to brewing, although the current business only dates to 1993. These vats are unusual for places like this in that they're fully modern, as in stainless steel, while most brewpubs pride themselves on using very old fashioned methods in order to improve quality. To be fair, though, these vats are open, which is old fashioned, although they're protected behind glass.

This was the horse stable at the brewery, surprisingly right next to the brewpub. Although it's a bit hard to see the horses, they're in there hidden in the shadows of those stalls on the left.

This room looks big, but I have maybe a third of the room behind me, plus the corner building, and behind the big screen television there's another whole room. All in all, I think this may have been the biggest pub I've ever been in, and it took me 10 or 20 minutes to get a beer and a seat. In the end, I had to get my dinner elsewhere since there was no way that I would be served before closing time. The most interesting thing about this place, in my opinion, is that in spite of globalization, and the obvious intention at this pub of catering to tourists, almost everybody there was German (with the exception of one or two tables of Americans), and the food was traditional German in every way.

Although you can still get the EU standard half-litre mugs at the Augustiner brewpub, they seem to prefer the full-litre mugs that they're known for, and which my flatmates back in Prague have.

Here's the brewpub at the Augustiner brewery, which looks deceptively small. In reality, that corner building is only the entrance and one of the smaller bars. Most of the action is over to the right, in a building that's several times longer than you can see here.

The next day, I went on another bike ride, this time with other teachers from one of the schools that I work at. This was the lunch break at Restaurace Skoda Lasky in Zabraslav. Incidentally, my bike isn't visible, so I've put this in the "My Bike" album for the general idea.

Beer Glass, Prague, CZ, 2009

15 Jul 2009 326
I know exactly where the pub I took this is, but I've forgotten the name at the moment. Basically, this was an experiment with the cameraphone resting on the glass, pointing down into it. The beer glass is a Staropramen one, if you can't read the lettering.

Slovanka, appropriately enough for a Czech tourist attraction, has its own hospoda, or pub, pictured here.

This was another shot from my first cross processed Fujichrome that I converted to black and white in Adobe Photoshop. This shot looks almost conventional as a result, kind of like an antique photo.

Guy Fawkes pub, York, North Yorkshire, England(UK)

"Guy Fawkes was a very naughty man!!" :-) This pub is allegedly where he planned his naughty actions, but I haven't been able to verify whether this is true, or just a local legend.

No, I'm not a student at Bradford, and never have been, but I do have friends there. I took this shot more or less randomly, and amazingly it came out nicely, even though I was using my built-in flash at close range. Okay, so Old Speckled Hen is a recent development, not an old authentic English ale at all, but it is a NEW authentic English ale!! :-) It's also very good.
