I just liked the contrast between the trees and the (almost) modern buildings (which always lean like this ... don't they?). www.youtube.com/watch?v=xl2bvKPOIO4&t=764s Janis Joplin at her best, or close to it.

Torre Windsor burnt down on this site in 2004 and El Corte Inglés (think cross between Harrods and M&S) bought the site and made it one of their flagship stores. (And I was pleased to see the classic Triumph bike there!).

Another 'thingy'!

A hydraulic turbine of some kind, I presume. In the Jardín Nuevos Ministerios, Madrid. José Gafarot has helpfully provided the answer below.

Any ideas?

This station is huge. If you want to change metro lines here, in some instances you have a 12 minute walk. This mainline section of the station effectively cuts the metro element in two, hence the long walks to get under or over this between lines!

The only statue of Franco in Madrid (and an equestrian one at that) stood here or very near here. One night in 2004, the authorities quietly removed it.

I understand that there used to be an equestrian statue of Franco on this spot. The large complex of Nuevo Ministerios was designed by the famous architect Secundino Zuazo in the 1920s. Work started in the early 30s, was delayed by the civil war and resumed under Franco who changed the design to suit his own more conservative tastes. There were teeming hordes of people a split second before I lined up my mobile phone and ... miracle of miracles ... the teeming hordes parted and I was left with a clear view of this.

with the Azca business centre behind. I've taught at all the tall buildings you see but not yet at Nuevos Ministerios, itself! Only a matter of time - I have taught at government departments but at other locations in Madrid.
