We are on Week 9 of our 10-Week project and it's time to discuss which project we will do next!

Below are all of the project ideas that we got. Please read each of the ideas carefully so that you understand what they are. Do you have any others to add to this list? If so, please add them to the bottom of the comments and I'll add them to this group. In about a week, I will put up a new poll for us to vote on.

These are the ideas that we have so far (I removed "trees" since we did that project already, and "Shapes" since we are currently finishing this winning project idea!):

1-10: A repeat of one of my second personal project which the whole group would get to be involved in. A few of us did this one together and had a lot of fun, finding an increased challenge as the number increased.

Collections: 10 weeks devoted to your choice of subject. For instance; 10 different flowers, insects, pieces of jewelry, types of fabric, beads, tools, feathers, etc, etc.

Color Wheel, Personal Theme: Similar to the project we are currently working on, this would be more challenging by restricting yourself to a specific topic. For those that didn't want this added challenge, they could choose Open as their personal topic and have a fun and easy time without fuss or muss. (Please see my project to see a themed project, it's Beads.)

A-Z: This project would be a special 26 week long project, and I really don't know if it would be good to suggest, since it's not a 10-week length, and there is some additional challenge with some difficult letters. I think that this project would actually be better as its own group, maybe a group that focuses on longer and/or more difficult projects.

Opposites: 10 weeks devoted to 5 pairs of opposites. For instance, we could choose the opposite pairs of light/dark, big/small, under/over, young/old, and smooth/bumpy. Each of the weeks we would concentrate on one of the pairs.

Types of Photography: 10 weeks illustrating different types of photography. For instance: minimalist, landscape, macro, high-key, low-key, portrait, black & white, bokeh, long-exposure, still life, abstract, collage, etc. I think we might need to include a few either/or's for people who can't take/create certain types of pictures, like macro or collage.

Weather Conditions: Janano came up with the super idea of 10 weeks of weather conditions, such as sun, rain, snow, wind, storms/stormy, fog/mist/, ice, frost, cloudy/ clouds, clear blue sky.

Seasonal projects: Peter came up with another idea of a seasonal theme. For example, Spring images could be the first flowers, leaves, baby animals, spring sports, holidays during that time, etc. Summer images could be beach scenes or summer flowers and meadows, sunny pictures, summer sports holidays at that time, etc.Fall images could be the colors of Fall, leaf patterns, harvest, fall sports, holidays during that time, etc. Winter images could be snow-related and cold landscapes, winter sports (Skiing, walking, sledges, biking, snow shoes), winter holidays, etc.

Textures: How about 10 weeks of textures? For instance, soft, fuzzy, smooth, rough, bumpy, sharp, wet, hairy, feathery, grooved, etc.

Fixed Focal Length: Claus came up with an idea of various focal lengths. For example, each week would have another focal length, such as 1st week - 18 mm, Week 2 - 30 mm, Week 3 - 40 mm, Week 4 - 50 mm, and so on. For those who don't have that week's fixed lenses, a zoom lens which is adjusted to that week's focal length could be used. The subject each week would be the photographer's choice.

Subject Distance: Oskari came up with a variation of the focal length theme, which could be "subject distance". For example, from macro distance (1cm/inch) to medium (1 meter/yard) to long (100m/yards) to near infinite and we would set up 10 distances to carry us through the project.

Famous Photographers: Okari also came up with another idea, which would be imitate that week's photographer's style. Or to reproduce the mood of a certain (famous) photograph. This kind of project would be clearly explained with examples for each week so that everyone would understand what to do.

Memories: Heidiho suggested this idea: Everybody has pleasant/unpleasant memories ....of childhood, first love, ...... a smell, a view, a person, a small town/village, a landscape, first car, special trip, memorable meeting, a feeling of happiness .....we would have to come up with 10 different kinds of memories we've had, and it would be our challenge to come up with a picture each week to represent the theme.

Shoes: aNNa schramm suggested this great topic: shoes with different themes for each week, such as shoes in colour (red or green or blue), fashion boots, mountain boots, dance shoes, etc. I think this would be a super project to do!! But I agree with the current feeling that it would be nice to have our next project be something very wide in scope, since Trees was so specific. Definitely on my short list of ideas though, thanks Anna! :)

(none of the examples are set in stone and can be changed for a final list of ten if one of the ideas is something we'd like to do for an upcoming project)

That would be a really fun idea because of all the different aspects you can cover. Macro to landscape, this topic would be fun for any type of photographer to play with!

GREAT IDEA! And gosh, that opens the door to ANY subject, really...insects, flowers, etc., etc.

I also really like the 10-weeks idea. A nice round number, and not such a big commitment that it would be hard to follow through.

Seasons is a grand idea … but remember that some of us live in the southern hemisphere and thus our seasons are reversed. (Actually it's *yours* that are reversed; ours come at the proper times!)

Oh you are so right!! :) I didn't think about that...hmmm...I wouldn't want to force people to grab pictures from their archives unless they lived in the same hemisphere...I wonder how we could do that project so that everyone can go out and take pictures of the proper weather....hmmmm....

I suggest that members be divided into Southern - Northern, Problem solved except of course for those living in Tropical Zones where seasonal changes are almost non existent.
Just a thought.

That would be really fun and challenging. I really enjoy projects that require a bit more work and thought to achieve. However, when it becomes a challenge, a lot of people walk away because they don't have time for that. I get it. I wanted very much to be involved in The Sunday Challenge and Scavenger Hunt, for example, but I was working on my 365 and couldn't handle those groups. When the year ended and I was able to be involved, I needed a creative break. Finally, I needed to just do something simple to get my engine running again, so my projects came to life and here we are. For this group, the projects need to be something that's easily accessible to everyone. And if that doesn't sound challenging enough, add a specific requirement for yourself, such as a type of subject. The Color Wheel project is exceedingly simple. But if you decide that you're only going to take pictures of red SIGNS or SHOES or FOOD, or whatever, suddenly the challenge shoots up.

Perhaps I'll suggest a future project down the road as Color Wheel, Personal Theme. Folks who want to have a simple time can just choose NONE as their personal theme, but I would bet that many or most would jump on that, esp since I will have paved the path with my themed group for this project being BEADS.

Regarding an A-Z project, why not run it as a 'sideline' game in the threads? members can dip in whenever they feel they have a suitable contribution. You can set it up however suits best- either starting with 'A' and submitting each image in alphabetical order rolling over without any time constraints or allocating two weeks to each letter making it a year-long sideline. There are NO challenging letters only unimaginative minds :-))
There's always a way :-)

How about Time as a project, gives one a lot of scope from subject matter (clocks and watches etc) to exposures and techniques.

A Ten week project with Insects would be a good choice as most of us see many every day throughout the year. Insects such as Butterfly's can be dealt with either as Close up or Macro.
Tiny insects in Macro of course.
Birds could also fill the roll as an alternative to Insects as could Wild Mammals, Reptiles, Fish and Amphibians etc.

I don't support the ideas where Technical know how is involved as this would limit the number of interested members.

The One to Ten idea gives many possibilities, other ideas could be based upon Ancient or historic buildings such as Castles, Churches etc, yes the list of subjects goes on and on.

I would prefer formal visual themes, which allow each participant to use his existing and beloved technical possibilities. I especially like the geometric theme of Chrissy, or the theme opposites.
Why only 1 image per week? Opposites may be better represented by 2 images.

If 2 images, then you could also think of a kind of domino. e.g. the output image contains red. The next participant inserts a picture with red and another one with a different color. The following image must contain the same color, and the second image of this participant a new color .... Maybe too difficult?

A good point is raised regarding Christmas. Hmm...I wonder if we should take a break after this project until the 1st of January. What do you guys think?
Stormlizard club has replied to Janet Brien club
Well Janet not everybody Celebrates Christmas, several do more for the New Year.
Why not a short 4 week Project with freedom to upload two photos for each week as and when during that time in order to reduce pressure on participants?
Subject could be "City decoration, home decoration Holiday type foods etc." I know that in South East Asia although the people are Buddhists they do many things for Christmas but in a Festival manner, as to the Western Religious one.

There are so fine ideas for projects.
It is able to vote for more than one favorite ?
For example: for me it is difficult to decide.
I really like the idea for OPPOSITES ( for details: I'm with Gisela).

Remember that many people have fully automatic cameras (The so called Fool Proof) where none of the Technical jargon is known by the user, they simply "Point and Press" for at times extremely good results all performed by their camera.

I'm another who'd prefer something simple and not too technical. I like the idea of a simple subject - buildings, cold, trees, food, animals, transport etc - which can be interpreted in lots of different ways, and which anyone can participate in.

We already have The Alphabet Site group for A-Z pictures, so it would be better to do something different here, in my opinion.
 Janet Brien
Janet Brien club
I agree that our projects should be simple because I want the highest number of people able to join in. There are other groups for more technical-minded, or for those who want more challenge. I love the idea of something challenging, but I don't think this is the right group for that. As it was mentioned by Stormlizard and others, simple is better for more people, and a lot of people lack the know-how or the right equipment for more complex projects. So have no fear--our next project will be something all of us should be able to participate in! :)

Right now the votes are leaning towards the subject of TREES. It's a great choice because there are so many things one can focus on. It can be 10 different leaves, or 10 different trees, or a mix, or anything having to do with trees...landscape, macro, whatever. It's such a broad and open topic that I think the variety of images we would see would be really fun and surprising. I'm going to wait another week to make a final decision, but it's a nice pick for this next project. Remember: if you are hoping for a different subject, hopefully we can do that one for the next project after this one! :)

I'm going to go ahead with the agreement by many to begin our next project in the first week of January. I'll update the rules when I have a spare moment! :)

All the suggestions are great and I'd enjoy doing any of them. "Types of Photography" interests me because there are many items on the list I'm interested in learning or improving my skill in. OK all of them are but I understand it might be a problem for those here to have fun without getting too technical.

I used a small point and shoot for many years and have taken quite a few photos with it that I'm proud of. Things like good composition or knowing a good shot when you see it don't have anything to do with how many buttons your camera has. It's really all about having some fun with it and I had just as much fun with my old camera as I do with my current one. Come to think of it I used to curse a lot less with the old point and shoot :)

My Goodness you lot...! What a lot of negativity! issues with tree's winter or summer, archive or fresh, holidays or not, breaks over christmas... dear oh dear this is not a legal requirement, no-one's going to come knocking on the door to arrest you for breaking group rules or not taking pictures. The projects will involve different challenges for different people with all their different equipment... Be inspired, do what you can within the brief. Stop prevaricating and get snapping/uploading!!! :-)
I have a problem with trees too, I think they are boring but that's part of the challenge isn't it? trying to make them interesting in ten different ways... I cant wait :-)

Mickey Fez; you have a great little camera! there is nothing here that you can't do, you might need a little help or guidance with some of the more technical stuff but I am yet to see a theme driven by these things here! i put up a lot of photo's in my stream taken with my phone, the quality is non existent!!!

Wow, this is one whole lot of ideas ... May I come out with yet another idea? I would call it "10 Songs - 10 Pics". This is an idea, that was originally born for an event called Berlin Photo Marathon (> 300 phtographers should shoot 24 pictures each in 24 hours, so they had 24 songs to transpose to picture). In our photo-group we reduced it to 12 songs (and 12 pics). For an example you may have a look at my ideas:
www.myheimat.de/burgdorf/freizeit/zwoelf-lieder-zwoelf-bilder-ein-foto-projekt-der-donnerstagsrunde-d2370554.html (in German, though)
There's no need to know the songs, even if it may help (or not ;-D ). The inspiration for the photo is just in the title.

Oh yes, and my current favourite is TREES.

Well, it looks like TREES is going to be our next group project! :)
I think I'd like to create 10 different themes. For instance:

Week 1: Single Tree
Week 2: Group of Trees/Forest
Week 3: Tree Silhouette
Week 4: Tree Parts: Green Leaves
Week 5: Tree Parts: Bark
Week 6: Tree Parts: Trunk/Branches/Twigs
Week 7: Tree Parts: Autumn Leaves
Week 8: Tree without Leaves (can be dormant or dead)
Week 9: Evergreen Tree
Week 10: Deciduous Tree

This list can be altered before the project begins, so what do you think? Am I missing something totally obvious? Do you dislike something on this list? Let me know!! :D

I´ve got another idea in this moment. What about feelings? (There´s no need to have a person on the picture I think ...) Happiness, Sadness, Loneliness, Excitement, Boredom, Inspired, Impressed, Touched, Amused, Relaxed, Peaceful, Aggressive, Stressed, Anxious, Confused, and I don´t know

Janet Brien club has replied to Chrissy club
Super cool idea, Chrissy!! :) But I will have to tell you, that would be a project for a Challenge group because it's not so easy to depict a feeling in a picture...some will be easy, others, you would have to think about very hard...always possible, but this kind of photography does not come easily to everyone and I think would be very frustrating for many. I love the idea though, and how fantastic to see the results of such a project!! :) It makes me wonder, could this project be possible without using people or animals to depict the emotion? Something to think about!! :)
