El primer document que esmenta l'església és del 993, quan Berenguer bisbe d'Elna la consagrà; i és esmentada novament el 1001 en la donació que aquest en féu a Sintil·la, abat d'Arles. Fou reconsagrada pel bisbe Arnau el 1158, possiblement a causa d'una reconstrucció total. El 1621 fou substituïda com a seu parroquial per l'antiga església del castell, fins aleshores dedicada a Sant Jaume, en una situació més cèntrica respecte al nucli urbà. Actualment el temple romànic és en procés de restauració.

Arquitectura[modifica]
El temple és de nau única, acabada amb un absis semicircular. Les parets són fetes de pedra tallada disposada en gran aparell. La teulada ha desaparegut amb el pas dels anys, i només resta la coberta de l'absis, de pissarra. La part superior d'aquest és decorada amb un fris de dents de serra i per dessota s'hi obre una finestra senzilla. La porta és a la façana meridional, rematada per un timpà pla i amb una arquivolta en tres arcs en degradació. La nau comunica amb l'absis mitjançant un arc triomfal de grans dimensions; inscrits en la paret per sobre i als costats de l'arc hi ha dos petits òculs que devien contribuir a il·luminar (si bé escassament per les seves reduïdes dimensions) la nau.

Va ser declarada monument històric de Françael 1964.

The first document to mention the Church dates back to 993, when Berenguer bisbe d'Elna consecrated it; and it was mentioned again in 1001 in the donation that he made to Sintil-la, at the abbey of Arles. It was reconstructed by bishop Arnau in 1158, possibly because of a total reconstruction. In 1621 it was replaced as its parish church by the old Spanish church, dedicated to Saint James, in a more central location with respect to the city centre. The Romanesque church is currently being restored.

The temple is of a single nau, finished with a semicircular absis. The walls are made of carved stone and are arranged in a large unit. The thielding has disappeared over the years, and only the cover of the absis, made of stone, remains. The upper part is decorated with a frieze of serrated teeth and the rest is covered with a simple window. The door is on the southern side, finished off by a flat door and an archway with three decaying arches. The boat communicates with the absis by means of a large triumphal arch; inscribed on the wall above and on the sides of the arch are two small arches that contribute to illuminate (if not very much because of its reduced dimensions) the boat.

It was declared a historic monument of France in 1964.
