Bhimsen Tower, also known as Dharahara-Tower, was a nine storey (50.2m) tall tower at the center of Kathmandu. It was built in 1832 AD by the then Prime Minister Bhimsen Thapa of Nepal under the orders of Queen Lalit Tripura Sundari. The tower had a spiral staircase inside containing 113 steps. The 8th floor was holding a circular balcony for observers that provides a panoramic view of the whole Kathmandu valley. Most of the tower collapsed in the 25 April 2015 Nepal earthquake, but the base remains. Sixty bodies were found in the rubble. Reconstruction of the tower is to commence in November 2017.

Already situated at the highest point of the town, its dominant position is accentuated still further by a tall stepped platform. It lies at 1414 m altitude and was built in the year 1655 AD by Vishwanath Raurta. Standing by the temple, one can enjoy the beautiful landscape of the valley including the Himalayan ranges. The Temple is gotten by climbing the stone stairway by the saddle. On either side of the beginning of the stairway is a stone elephant with spikes on them. The is dedicated to Shiva and his consort Parvati. To the left of the main deities is the form of Shiva with Parvati leaning against him seductively. The temple originally had four roofs. It was damaged in the earthquake of 1934 and was restored. Its advised don't sit on elephants back!

View from our walking tour from Bungmati to Khokana. The Newari who live here eek out a simple living off the land. Much of their daily activities take place outside of their dwellings and they really do seem to embrace nature. Thus, as you make your way down the main street of the village, you will see woman sitting outside spinning, men crushing seeds, and other daily activities.
