Large populations of crown-of-thorns starfish have been substantiated as occurring at twenty one locations of coral reefs during the 19th. These locations ranged from the Andaman Sea to the tropical Indo-Pacific region. There were at least two substantiated repeated outbreaks at ten of these locations.
