So, there's another Finnish company you may want keep eye on: Kotkamills. They have somewhat only just started, but hopefully they, or at least their innovation, becomes worldwide. Last time I read news about the innovation (in Finnish), I found out they did not apply patent for it. And that is because patents are public, and therefore also sort of a idea leak.
Huh? What's that word on my lips?

For me as a Finn, it was a surprise to find a familiar word and a name right under my nose, when visiting Dublin last summer. But for an Irish it must look gibberish.
The company name is a rather common surname in Finland. In English it means the same as "Swidden Hill", and "Schwendbau Berg" in German.
As many other companies at the same business, it currently does it's best to get rid of the plastic. It just made a big contract with McDonald's to replace plastic straws with paper straws. One of the great new challenges is to replace plastic for what's in the picture.
Can you guess what is in the picture, and what the company is? Easy, I am sure, especially if you have used to take your coffee and go.

I got surprised to find so much interesting stuff when trying to find out what porcelain actually is. Like most of the great innovations, also "china" indeed comes from China. What I actually tried to find is the difference between porcelain and faience. And the main difference is the temperature where the both of them becomes burned. Porcelain requires much higher temperature. And that also turned out the reason why especially during 1970s oil crises many ceramic factories settled for producing faience instead. And the blue color typical for many porcelain items is because the blue tint withstands the high temperatures best.
