Lichtsäulen entstehen durch die Spiegelung des Sonnenlichts an hexagonalen Eisplättchen, die bei nahezu Windstille langsam absinken und sich dabei vorzugsweise horizontal in der Luft ausrichten. Sie sind deshalb nur bei entsprechend windarmen Wetterbedingungen zu beobachten. Im Gegensatz zu den verwandten Haloerscheinungen Unter- und Übersonne und der Tatsache, dass die sechseckigen Eisplättchen in ihrer horizontalen Ausrichtung wechselnde Kippwinkel aufweisen, wird ähnlich einem Glitzerpfad der Sonne auf einer leicht bewegten Wasserfläche eine Lichtsäule sichtbar. In sehr seltenen Fällen und bei sehr konstanter und geringer Luftbewegung sind auch leicht gebogene Lichtsäulen möglich. A light pillar, or sun pillar, appears as a vertical pillar or column of light rising from the sun near sunset or sunrise, though it can appear below the sun, particularly if the observer is at a high elevation or altitude. Hexagonal plate- and column-shaped ice crystals cause the phenomenon. It is often caused by water droplets in the sky. Plate crystals generally cause pillars only when the sun is within 6 degrees of the horizon, or below it; column crystals can cause a pillar when the sun is as high as 20 degrees above the horizon. The crystals tend to orient themselves near-horizontally as they fall or float through the air, and the width and visibility of a sun pillar depends on crystal alignment. It had been a long drive that Saturday. It took me from Cortez, CO to Flagstaff, AZ via Moki Dugway with some detours to visit Natural Bridges, Goosenecks, and Monument Valley. (351 mi / 565 km). I really enjoyed the trip and later the hotel pool :-)

Taken at 5:12 am from the summit of the Saentis (2.502m) after a very short night in the hut with our group of 16 hikers sleeping in the same room. The weather looks pleasant, however it was -4°C with a gusty nortwesterly wind. To our regret we missed the sunrise about an hour earlier because of a the massive inversion layer which is just dissolving.

Mono Lake is a large, shallow saline soda lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in a endorheic basin. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake. These salts also make the lake water alkaline. This desert lake has an unusually productive ecosystem based on brine shrimp that thrive in it's waters, and provides critical nesting habitat for two million annual migratory birds that feed on the shrimp. The human history of Mono Lake is associated with its productive ecosystem. The native Kutzadika'a people derived nutrition from the larvae of the alkali flies that live in the lake. When the city of Los Angeles diverted water from the lake, it lowered the lake level, which imperiled the migratory birds.
