Somerset Coast
New Year Beach Walk
A winter walk on the beach at Burnham on Sea, looking across Bridgwater Bay to the Bristol Channel Islands (see 2 Notes) and a distant South Wales landscape,
Flat-bottomed clouds are those still forming or have recently formed
I think a large view preferable
Sea Wall
Benches built into the rather battered sea wall on the Bristol Channel Coast at Watchet,
Overlooking the harbour, facing south and sheltered from the prevailing wind, they are sought after seats in the better weather despite the condition,
The Bristol Channel has a huge tidal range and is open to Atlantic Storms, so sea defences take a terrible battering during winter months. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Channel
The Writing on the Wall, 1 pip & 1 note
The writing on the Marina wall (Far Side, large view required) is a quote from Samuel Taylor Coleridge, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner which was inspired when Coleridge, Wordsworth, and Wordsworth's sister Dorothy visited while on a walking tour through the Quantock Hills in Somerset,
The Statue is of John Short (‘Yankee Jack’) born here in 1839 he went to sea and eventually joined a Yankee ship in the American Civil War, He was also a great singer of Sea Shanties and often sang on the quayside. The statue is by Alan B. Herriot, of Penicuik, Scotland.
The pip shows a statue of the Ancient Mariner holding the albatross, this was also designed and created by sculptor Alan B. Herriot, of Penicuik, Scotland, cast by Powderhall Fine Art Foundries in Edinburgh.
HFF and a good week to you all
Breakwater in Winter
It's late on a December afternoon as the weak winter sun drops through the mists of Exmoor and catches the battered breakwater at Watchet on the Somerset coast,
In my opinion, it's better viewed large,
HFF and a Happy New Year to all
Heritage Mural
A section of a concrete sea defence on the Bristol Channel coast at Watchet in Somerset,
It represents Watchet's historical past, ranging from sea monsters of the Jurassic coast to the paper and wool trades, and the influences of industry, the sea, Christianity, Brunell and JMW Turner,
I must recommend a large view
Patchwork.
Large Please.
Bridgwater Bay and the fertile coastal plain around the mouth of the River Parrett with the Mendip Hills as a backdrop, taken from Walford's Gibbet on Somerset's Quantock Hills.
Empty Benches and Evening Sun.
A pleasant April evening in Prince Consort Gardens, Weston Super Mare.
The Romance of Sunset
As the sun drops below the horizon and another day draws to close leaving the tide to ebb out of Bridgwater Bay until the morning tide arrives, and another day dawns,
HFF and good, peaceful week.
On the Roof
A sea front weather vane at Burnham on Sea in Somerset.
