"La Clepsidre" (en polonais : Sanatorium pod klepsydrą) est un film polonais de 1973 réalisé par Wojciech Jerzy Has, avec Jan Nowicki, Tadeusz Kondrat, Mieczysław Voit, Halina Kowalska et Gustaw Holoubek. L'histoire suit un jeune homme juif qui rend visite à son père dans un sanatorium mystique où le temps ne se comporte pas normalement. Le film est une adaptation du recueil de contes "Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass" de Bruno Schulz. Il a remporté le Prix du Jury au Festival de Cannes 1973.
Joseph (Jan Nowicki) voyage dans un monde onirique, prenant un train délabré pour rendre visite à son père mourant, Jacob, dans un sanatorium hors du temps. Lorsqu'il arrive à l'hôpital, il constate que tout l'établissement va s'effondrer et que personne ne semble se préoccuper des patients. Le temps semble se comporter de manière imprévisible, réanimant le passé à travers des caprices artificiels inattendus.

Bien que Joseph soit toujours représenté comme un adulte, son comportement et les personnes qui l'entourent le dépeignent souvent comme un enfant. Il se lie d'amitié avec Rudolf, un jeune garçon qui possède un album de timbres-poste. Les noms des timbres déclenchent chez Joseph une foule d'associations et d'aventures. Parmi les nombreuses occurrences de cette fantasmagorie visuellement puissante, on retrouve Joseph qui revie des épisodes de son enfance avec son père follement excentrique (qui vit avec des oiseaux dans un grenier), qui est arrêté par une mystérieuse unité de soldats pour avoir fait un rêve sévèrement critiqué en haut lieu, qui réfléchit sur une fille dont il a fantasmé dans son enfance et qui réquisitionne un groupe de mannequins de cire historiques. Tout au long de son étrange voyage, un sinistre conducteur de train aveugle réapparaît comme une figure de mort.

Has ajoute également une série de réflexions sur l'Holocauste qui n'étaient pas présentes dans les textes originaux, en lisant la prose de Schulz à travers le prisme de la mort de l'auteur pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale et de la disparition du monde qu'il a décrit. [Wikipedia].
Le mode de vie de la communauté juive polonaise de l'époque est savamment restitué dans une vérité baroque qui lui donne une réalité empreinte d'un réalisme mystique prégnant et philosophique, qui rend l'ouvrage quasiment hypnotique, tout au moins énigmatique et "viral" pour reprendre la terminologie actuelle, qui nécessite 2 à 3 visions avant d'être complètement appréhendée...

The "Hourglass Sanatorium" (Polish: Sanatorium pod klepsydrą) is a 1973 Polish film directed by Wojciech Jerzy Has, starring Jan Nowicki, Tadeusz Kondrat, Mieczysław Voit, Halina Kowalska and Gustaw Holoubek. It is known as The Sandglass in English-speaking countries. The story follows a young Jewish man who visits his father in a mystical sanatorium where time does not behave normally. The film is an adaptation of Bruno Schulz's story collection Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass. It won the Jury Prize at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival.
Joseph (Jan Nowicki) travels through a dream-like world, taking a dilapidated train to visit his dying father, Jacob, in a sanatorium. When he arrives at the hospital, he finds the entire facility is going to ruin and no one seems to be in charge or even caring for the patients. Time appears to behave in unpredictable ways, reanimating the past in an elaborate artificial caprice.

Though Joseph is always shown as an adult, his behavior and the people around often depict him as a child. He befriends Rudolf, a young boy who owns a postage stamp album. The names of the stamps trigger a wealth of association and adventure in Joseph. Among the many occurrences in this visually potent phantasmagoria include Joseph re-entering childhood episodes with his wildly eccentric father (who lives with birds in an attic), being arrested by a mysterious unit of soldiers for having a dream that was severely criticized in high places, reflecting on a girl he fantasized about in his boyhood and commandeering a group of historic wax mannequins. Throughout his strange journey, an ominous blind train conductor reappears like a death figure.

Has also adds a series of reflections on the Holocaust that were not present in the original texts, reading Schulz's prose through the prism of the author's death during World War II and the demise of the world he described. [Wikipedia]
The way of life of the Polish Jewish community at the time is skillfully reconstructed in a baroque truth which gives it a reality imbued with a powerful mystical and philosophical realism, which makes the work almost hypnotic, at least enigmatic and "viral" to use today's terminology, which requires 2 to 3 visions before it is completely apprehended...
