Sophie showing off her halloween costume (Fred from Scooby Doo) to her donkey bff, Tucker. :)

I always make Sophie wear her halloween costume to school at our first post-halloween lesson... :) This year, she was Fred from Scooby Doo; of cousre she had to show off her costume to Tucker, her donkey BFF. :)

Went to the native plant sale looking for things to plant for my tortoise (for next spring, when he comes back out of his burrow); came home with a bunch of butterfly-friendly plants as well. :) (and then went to cactus mart the next day and sort of accidentally came home with another car-load of butterfly plants...)
The tortoise garden is also a butterfly- (and lizard, and bee, and hummingbird) garden; and some of the plants are in both gardens. but this one also has the not-safe-for-tortoises butterfly-friendly plants - like milkweeds, for migrating monarchs. :)

Pencil cholla I planted as a little two- or three-branch cutting a year or two ago... At first I thought it was just a leaf or something caught in the cactus, leaned in for a closer look and found a surprise crest. :)

Last weekend someone backed their car over that little bunny-ear cactus while attempting to turn their car around in my driveway... I performed some minor surgery on the cactus, removing some of the badly-mangled paddles (which I replanted elsewhere in the garden), propping the flattened-but-intact ones back up. Piled some chunky gravel around the base, and lined up a bunch of bigger rocks along the edge of the driveway; so far it seems to be working, no one tried driving through my garden today...
