Een prachtig en fotogeniek gewas, waar maar heel weinig van in Nederland wordt verbouwd!
Het merendeel wordt verbouwd in Frankrijk en België en ongeveer 10% (2.572 hectare vezelvlas in 2017) van het totaal van deze drie landen in Nederland. De opbrengst gaat grotendeels naar China.
Lange vezels brengen het meest op: Deze worden tot garen gesponnen door spinnerijen. Deze garens gaan daarna naar weverijen die er linnen van maken. Van alle textiel in de wereld is ongeveer 0,4% gemaakt van linnen. De korte vlasvezels worden onder meer verwerkt in papier en bouwmaterialen.
