Kangaamiut
Kangaamiut was founded in 1755 by a Danish trader and then called Sukkertoppen. As the harbour is rather exposed most of the inhabitants were later moved to Maniitsoq, founded in 1781 and with a sheltered harbour. Kangaamiut these days is a small fishing community with some 300 inhabitants. It has a harbour for small boats only so that the coastal ferry Sarfaq Ittuk has to use her lifeboat to get travellers on and off.

Am I correct in thinking that we're looking at the back of the houses here and that the fronts are facing inland to shield them from the weather? When I first looked at the photo it seemed a bit odd, until I realised I couldn't see any front doors :)
Gudrun club has replied to Keith Burton clubAlcoholism, depression, suicide and abuse are problems of most Inuit communities, not only in Greenland but all around the Arctic (Canada, Alaska...). It's the usual colonial story- missionaries, traders, disease, resettlement, Western economic interests and now climate change destroying what is left of the traditional lifestyle.
