Kookaburra

25 Nov 2024 44 29 111
Kookaburras are terrestrial tree kingfishers of the genus Dacelo native to Australia and New Guinea, which grow to between 28 and 47 cm (11 and 19 in) in length and weigh around 300 g (11 oz). The name is a loanword from Wiradjuri guuguubarra, onomatopoeic of its call. The loud, distinctive call of the laughing kookaburra is widely used as a stock sound effect in situations that involve an Australian bush setting or tropical jungle, especially in older movies. rangerrick.org/rr_videos/a-kookaburra-call-or-laugh

Australian Pied Oystercatcher

26 Nov 2024 46 33 134
The Australian Pied Oystercatcher is found in coastal areas throughout the Australian continent except for areas of unbroken sea cliffs such as the Great Australian Bight. They seldom allow a close approach and are readily disturbed by people. I find the eyes hypnotizing! Maybe better viewed full screen -1 pip

The World Turns by Michael Parekowhai - HFF

30 Nov 2024 56 51 146
Constructed in bronze by New Zealand artist Michael Parekowhai, "The World Turns" shows a 16-foot-high (five-meter-high) elephant frozen in time as it topples from a boulder. It looks as though the behemoth just finished a slow, graceful fall, having landed balanced on its head. Get closer to the artwork, and you'll realize the topsy-turvy elephant is staring right at a little kuril that's curled up nearby, scratching its tail. The kuril, a water rat, is one of the many caretakers of the traditional Aboriginal land where the museum stands. The creature is linked to the mangroves that run along the Kurilpa Point shoreline on the opposite river bank. In the artwork, the kuril has casually upended the world—and the huge elephant with it. This is meant to show that while history records just part of events, the world is always turning.
