David Bowie visited Warsaw in 1973 on his return from the Soviet Union where he made a trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Warsaw under the communist regime had a sad and depressing effect on him which is deeply reflected in his song. He took advantage of the train stop in Warsaw-Gare-de-Gdańsk (Warszawa Gdańska) to take a walk at the Place de la Commune de Paris (Plac Komuny Paryskiej), which in 1990 was renamed Place Wilson, and went into a bookshop and bought a few records. One of them contained Polish folk songs performed by the group Śląsk, from which he drew inspiration for the lyrics of his song.

Anti-Semitism is not dead, contrary to what history should teach us. Please let us remain vigilant
