A dusty Ice Road

A dusty Ice Road
A trip to the Athabasca Glacier in the Canadian Rocky Mountains gives us a ride inside a mighty juggernaut with vast wide tyres. Each vehicle which is loosely called a bus normally takes visitors over ice hills before letting the people out to explore themselves on the 100 metres or so coned area of glacier surface. This they did in awe, shivering before snapping away with their phones, then jumping up and down to see if they could create new crevasses :) However even in 2016 the ice had receded so far back that we were now traveling on a wide dirt track road instead of the glacier. One had to hold on tight as the vehicle seemed at times to be almost vertical. You see here a relatively flat section but you can also see the real ice road with a red bus returning below left. See part of the road too in the first PiP.

Essential full screen.

I was shocked by those "trucks" driving on the glacier. In my oppinion this should be forbidden in favour of the glacier. But tourism apparently comes first. Happy weekend, Herb!

Ah Stephan, in reality, we too were shocked as we had not expected this kind of trip. This was only a small part of the day's adventure. I think the idea of the big tyres were to keep damage to a minimum whilst taking tourist to the foot of the glacier in safety. It seems that Brewster still include this in their itinerary. As you rightly say - and its a pity really -tourism comes first as you will no doubt know from your own adventures in such places.

Best Wishes. Herb

Ah yes that was a trip and a half Toz. My first sighting of a glacier was from the foot of Grindelwald in Switzerland and my first walk on one was in the Norwegian Fjords. I doubt that this photo is a CWP winner but I thought it a bit different. I must admit to liking both your contenders there,

Cheers. Herb

From this photo and your narrative...........it seems like this trip was a super adventure...........I've seen glaciers (from the sea) but have never walked on one.

A smashing little series my friend, all very nicely captured..!! I especially like the image in the second PiP, which is very dramatic!

Thanks Keith. This was only a small part of that days adventures but quite a super part I must say. It was very slippery on the ice, even with a light covering of snow. In Norway I actually went a little distance underneath the pure blue ice. These things will always temp the more adventurous tourist. Seeing them from the sea can be good too as I know from my Alaska trip. -Glad you liked the series which help make up the full picture here.
