Saving a Democracy
Approximately 2,000 National Guard troops are currently posted in and around the Capitol Building, with more in surrounding areas, after a violent mob tried to occupy the Capitol Building on January 6th. Members of the senate were in the process of certifying the vote tally for each state. The mob of about 2000 was trying to stop the certification with the fantasy that this would make Trump president for another term. This, of course, would be illegal. President-elect Joe Biden will take his oath of office on 20 January. The National Guard are providing security for members of Congress until then due to "very high threat level." The number will increase to about 20,000 by inauguration day.

Fires in the Western United States
Can it get worse than a pandemic, record-breaking heat and a science-denying president? Yes, it can. All of that plus raging fires over big swathes of California, Oregon and Washington. If you don't know already, I live in southern Oregon. The closest fire to me is about 15 miles (24 km) north. The wind is currently blowing it toward the NW, but that changes, of course. There are so many fires all around that thick smoke is blanketing the entire region, making it highly undesireable to g…

Newsflash 2020-09-11
[EN] Dear members and friends of ipernity, 1) In the comments to the last Newsflash again many suggestions for improvement were made. We will do our best to fulfill them. However, it is not possible to make changes that require modifications of the database. With a ten-year-old database recording millions of uploads, ratings and comments linked together, the risk of causing critical follow-up problems would be too great. 2) Technical support would be helpful to accelerate the proce…

Video that you have at ipernity Adding video that you have at ipernity is easy. All you need to do is click 'Insert a media' button on blog article tool bar. Then choose 'Videos' and one (or more) that you wish to add on your article. Adding external video for example from YouTube 1) First on blog editor hit enter several times, to add some empty lines. That makes editing easier after you have embedded the code. 2) Copy the so called em…

[EN] Yahoo tolls the end of its free service "Yahoo-Groups". Yahoo will delete all uploaded content from its public newsgroups on December 14, 2019. Six months after Google+, the next "social network" is on the ropes. Users don't have much time to look around for alternatives. Uploading will already be blocked on 28 October 2019. Please promote ipernity to Yahoo users . We at ipernity still have 10 days to point out ipernity as an alternative in the Yahoo groups. If you are…

2019-03-01 Manifest for Reprogramming ipernity
Manifeste pour la reprogrammation d'ipernity ./. Manifest zur Neuprogrammierung von ipernity ./. As we all know, it is imperative to have the ipernity website reprogrammed from scratch as soon as possible. The necessary adaptations of this website that is ten years old, both in conception and technology, to be technically up to date are getting more and more difficult and expensive. This reprogramming does not focus on changing functionality or design, but on improving the technical basis in order to reduce costs and improve operational reliability. In view of increasing security requirements, the website must also be SSL-encrypted as quickly as possible. In view of changing user habits, it must be better adapted to mobile devices. Of course, the opportunity can also be used to consider long-cherished wishes if they are affordable.

Cabin fever
There are so many fires around Oregon and California that most people are staying inside whenever possible because of the smoke. I bought a good mask over the weekend, so if I do have to go out I'll be prepared. It's also very hot (90° - 105°). So, I've got cabin fever and I am not the only one! There are similar conditions in many places on the globe. I just saw on the news that today, Tokyo was 105°! I have been to Japan and it was more humid than anyplace I've ever been, including W. Afri…

One of The Good Guys
If you were on flickr and made the leap over to ipernity in May 2013 many of us did, one of the streams that surely stood out for you was one operated by MewDeep6. MewDeep6 is the way John chose to be known hereabouts. I am not suited to write any kind of biography of the man. What I do know is that I am very lucky to have known him these past few years. I knew him, I say. How I knew him was through emails and posts on flickr and ipernity. That counts, as any of us here can attest. From…
