Bedugul, 18 km north of Denpasar and 1400 meters above sea level, is known for its excellent golf course. The three lakes of the area provide the water for the fields, rivers and springs on the plains below. Lush pine forests make for clean air. The area renowned for its fruit and vegetables. A beautiful sight is the "Ulun Danu" temple which seems to rise out of the lake.

A big tree stands beside the entrance way to the temple complex. The words in Balinese often are written in different ways like "Bratan Lake" or "Lake Beratan". Most common is the notation like "Bratan" which I follow in my further descriptions.

After the most famous temple complex on Bali "Tanah Lot", the Ulun Danu Temple is surely the most photographed temple on this island.
We were lucky that the weather and clouds changed every minutes and show a different scene. Most photos show the temple in sunshine and with blue sky. We'd heavy rain, thick clouds and very dense fog - and only a few tourists.

This is one of Bali's most important irrigation temples, the destination of pilgrims from all over the island who come to worship Dewi Danu, Bali's water goddess. Periodically the temple is flooded by the rising lake, then reclaimed again and again.

The changeful weather conditions made me active for shooting more photos. I liked to shoot not only under sunshine and blue sky.

After Pura Tanah Lot this temple is one of the most photographed motives on Bali.
The temple sits on the western shore of Lake Bratan and it can give the illusion of actually floating on the water. Built in 1633, the temple is devoted to Ida Batara Dewi Ulun Danu, goddess of the lake.

Bratan or Beratan is a crater lake with a Hindu-Buddhist water temple built on islands. It was founded by the king of Mengwi in 1633 A.D and now has a temple garden on the lakeshore. The temple is dedicated to the Indo-European goddess Danu. She is a mother goddess in both Celtic and Hindu mythology.

The different temples in the complex thus reflect a concern with not only the invisible world, but the world of living as well. The traveller visiting this temple premise leaves with learning about this mythology.
