The Plompe Toren (23m.) was saved by the dike. The rest of the village Koudekerke disappeared in the waves of the Oosterschelde. Everything you see on this photo is now protected by the Delta Works.

The dike that keeps Holland safe from the sea. Part of the Delta Works. On the first of February 1953 a major flood occured caused by a combination of a severe storm and high spring tide. 50 Of the 200 villagers of Battenoord, seen on the right, drowned. A total of 1836 people died that night.
