Swimming King Penguins

Taken from the deck of our ship, which was surrounded by swimming penguins while at Lusitania Bay. Somewhat ungainly while on land, the penguins are agile and fast in the water - essentially using their wings as flippers.

Not far from the partying Royals, the Kings were being far more dignified. The quieter conditions were relaxing for some elephant seals to have a nap, while a Giant Petrel also rests (see note). At Sandy Bay, Macquarie Island.

Copied from an old slide. Dating from the early 1950s, the Lusitania Bay hut was a recycled aircraft engine packing crate! But it did provide overnight (if basic) accommodation. When I returned in 2005 for a visit, it was noticeable how the King Penguin colony had expanded to completely surround this hut.
