A convoy of fire fighting trucks arriving today from interstate Victoria, to assist with the large (UPDATED AM 4/12 no-w >47,000 ha) bush fire, currently out of control, just 10 km or so from our residence. At a public briefing today, the Rural Fire Service speaker said “We can’t stop this fire. It is so dry out in the bush, it will keep jumping over our control lines.” He added that only good rain (we're in a drought) can stop it totally. My lovely wife Pauline has resumed oncology treatment this week, following an operation several weeks ago. With that and the fire (and the possibility that we may have to move away for safety), it seems probable that I shall be a very irregular visitor to ipernity for a while. With the dreadful bushfires at present, this image from some years ago seems relevant. At the time I was a member of our local volunteer Rural Fire Service and we had been called out for a (fortunately) small local fire. Here the trucks are filling from a small farm dam. It's worth recording that there are something like 7,000 volunteer rural fire fighters in the state of NSW alone.

At the annual WHEELS display in Canberra, I couldn't resist a photo of the little red Renault between two equally red fire trucks from the Canberra Fire Museum , brought along by the The ACT Fire Brigade Historical Society. This led the senior member of the Fire Brigade group to say "Hey fellers, have a look, the trucks have had a pup!"
