Feed time

19 Aug 2020 34 20 327
One of the cattle on our former rural property, with a newly born calf enjoying a meal. The cow had been drinking water from the dam, hence the muddy legs.

Red Wattlebird

These gain their name from the red 'wattles', the small red pendant below their ears. They eat nectar, so with the callistemons (bottlebrush) coming into bloom it's 'party time' for them.

'Fred' came visiting..

The wild Crimson Rosella, who we call "Fred", dropped in for a snack of seeds on Christmas Day. Explored.

Feeding Fred

Last year I posted an image of a wild Crimson Rosella which had trained me to bring out some feed when he arrived outside and began to sing. He seems a bit old and worn and we've given him the name of Fred. He's now trained me to hand feed him. (2 images)

Feeding time at Ned's Beach

18 May 2017 11 10 454
Lord Howe Island is in a Marine Sanctuary. At Ned's Beach (previous image) the wild fish swim right around to be hand fed. There even is a coin-operated fish food dispenser (in the beach hut visible in the wider image of the beach).

Watching the lion feeding

The Macquarie Island 1968 reunion group at the Mogo Zoo, watching one of the keepers feeding the lions. See also image in note. Mogo has had a breeding programme for the rare white lions (one on the right). These are not albinos, but have two recessive genes. HFF.

Brush wattlebird feeding

24 Aug 2013 9 15 1110
Brush Wattlebird enjoying a meal of nectar from a Banksia flower spike. With the Pentax, the focal length needs to be entered for manual lenses - I forgot to change it for this shot with the 100mm from earlier use with a 50mm, hence the wrong FL shown in the EXIF info.

Piracy wins! Don't argue with rainbow lorikeets. :)

Out of there! #2 of sequence

20 Aug 2013 11 12 644
Contrary to appearances, the galah is not attacking the rainbow lorikeet, just the opposite. The lorikeet has dived in at high speed, making the galah leap backwards from the feeder. Lorikeets are often very aggressive when food is involved.

Not so fast! # 3 of sequence

Overcoming its surprise, the larger galah tries to stand its ground against the rainbow lorikeet. But it's game, set and match when a moment later a second lorikeet arrives (see Shot #4).

Galah portrait. #1 of sequence

One of a family of galahs that regularly come to our bird feeder. This one was kindly posing for the camera until, to its surprise and mine, a hungry rainbow lorikeet arrived (next shot).
