More on the Murray paddle steamers

29 Apr 2023 26 16 227
No not taken somewhere over 100 years ago, though the subjects have been around that long. In the PiPs, another image of the Adelaide (taken at the same time), also other paddle steamers. Finally, a PiP of the "combined" Murray River flag. thought to have been around in various forms since the 1850s and flown by all the Murray River boats. These conclude my series on this theme.

Steam at work

27 Apr 2023 29 27 222
This is the stoker at work on the "PS Pevensey", on which we cruised the Murray. It still has its original steam engine from 1911, using wood as fuel. In the PiPs, more views of the engine which is fully open to viewing by passengers (behind fences). Finally, a view of the paddle wheel operating, visible through a porthole. Happy Fence Friday and have a great weekend, everyone.

Here comes 'Emmylou'

26 Apr 2023 34 22 226
Early on our river cruise we had passed the "Emmylou" at her moorings (PiP 1). Not long afterward she came past us, heading up the river under full steam (PiP 2).

The new Dragon Boat

27 Jun 2020 36 21 290
From the appearance of the timber off-cuts and shavings around it, this racing Dragon Boat had just been completed. Shortly after I took this image, the crew arrived to take it for a run on the Mekong River (see PiPs). It seems that Dragon Boat racing is very popular on the river, as we saw crews out training at several places. Explored.

Pak Ou caves

25 Jun 2020 55 51 482
Upstream on the Mekong River from Luang Prabang are the Pak Ou caves. They're now a tourist destination, but for aeons they have been a revered Buddhist shrine where people have left statues of the Buddha, some now exceedingly old. (See the PiPs.) Best viewed large. Click here for a view from the caves. HFF everyone, stay safe and have a great weekend. Explored.

Let's get some water

Boats on the Mekong River, Laos, upstream from Luang Prabang.

Fishing the Mekong

24 May 2020 30 18 284
Best viewed large. From what I could see, most fishing on the Mekong River in Laos is done with fixed fish traps. Four are anchored to the bank here, the PiP shows others on the bank awaiting use. Essentially, the fish swims into the tapering funnel and is unable to reverse out, with the gate somehow closing behind. Thanks to Tacheles for suggesting this musical link.

Yangtze gorges

20 Nov 2017 31 17 807
Heading down the Yangtze River through the Three Gorges, apart from the impressive landscape we were surprised by the amount of shipping. The Three Gorges Dam has raised the river level substantially, making the channel much wider than before it was built - and the "high water" mark is very visible on the rock faces. Here's a musical link.

Opening the bridge

25 Nov 2016 29 26 707
One of the last operational lifting bridges in Australia, the Batemans Bay bridge recently celebrated its 60th anniversary. It opens daily for the upstream trip of the local tourist boat (which I was on for this shot). Needless to say, this creates substantial traffic jams on the main road, especially in the holiday season! Best viewed large on black. HFF, everyone. ** Additional note, as this type of bridge seems unfamiliar to most. The central portion of the bridge is balanced by the two large (concrete) counterweights, which descend as the bridge span rises. There are traffic lights to stop the road traffic (which can be seen on the side spans).

Down the Yarra

12 Dec 2020 19 18 734
Copied from an old slide and posted (too small) long ago. The good ship Nella Dan leaving the dock and heading down the Yarra River, December 1965, Melbourne. Next stop Antarctica. The cloud has continued to thicken since the earlier shots of the ship at the wharf preparing to depart.
