the gatehouse was built in 1518, but has been remodelled several times since, leaving both modern and c17 reminders.

I'm unsure why the old brickwork above the arcade between the pedestrian entrance and the main carriageway is stepped as it is. perhaps there was a plan to vault originally, and the gaps were for the tas-de-charge. the gatehouse was built in 1518, but has been remodelled several times since.
