detail of rheinish tower. the first earl of lovelace, byron's son in law, rebuilt a dull tudoresque house of 1820=9 by adding towers, bridges, walls and a cloister to his own design between 1847-60. he also rebuilt much of the village and his own mausoleum in the same style.

the walls of the churchyard are part of the designs of the first earl of lovelace which envelope mujch of the village too, spreading like flint and brick tentacles from his egregiously towered house. the small lookout here was the station of the youngest choirboy, whose job it was to warn the vicar of the earl's approach to services so that they could begin. built c.1875.
