single corbel, looking c12 to me, and an unpublished exhibitionist figure, possibly a type 1 sheela. the right arm passes under the right knee, though the left hand side and the genital area have been smashed.

this is the sheela na gig on the south side of the c12 nave, on the corbel table over the clerestory

Prob. dating from the early C12th, this sheela from Easthorpe church now resides in Colchester castle. Such figures were more likely warnings against lust than fertility symbols. it is extremely rare for any to be inscribed as this one is; the term "sheela" being a modern invention.
