The Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway was a railway company in Scotland. It was promoted independently but supported by the Caledonian Railway, and it was designed to connect Balloch (on Loch Lomond) and Dumbarton with central Glasgow, linking in heavy industry on the north bank of the River Clyde. From Dumbarton to Balloch the line would have closely duplicated an existing railway, and negotiation led to the latter being made jointly operated, and the L&DR terminated immediately east of Dumbarton, trains continuing on the joint section. The current Bonhill Bridge is the last in a line of crossings at this point, which in the past carried the A82, but is now unclassified. The first bridge was built in 1836 and was a light weight suspension bridge with a single span between stone arched abutments on the river bank. The bridge was often referred to as the 'Bawbee Bridge' as the Scottish term for a half penny - the price of the toll - was Bawbee. Quoted from Sabre Wiki . ND Filtration: 8 Stops

In the past the river was used to get steamers into Loch Lomond, although they sometimes did not find it an easy journey and could have difficulty getting past the bridges. Quoted from Wikipedia .
