Beaminster, Dorset ~ Three Shops

03 Jan 2023 33 42 168
Three shops in Beaminster, Dorset. Main picture: The Trading Post Vegetarian Cafe. 1st PiP. The excellent old style hardware store, where you could probably get everything required! 2nd PiP. Rambling Rose florist shop.

Around Beaminster.

Main picture shows Brassica Restaurant, which is award winning, apparently. The 1st PiP is of St Mary's Church. The 2nd PiP shows the two canine assistants in the excellent book shop. They were doing a fine job of keeping people in there longer! Whenever I touched the dog on the left, the one on the right nosed my hand back to his head!

I have had the card in this picture since 1982 and it is a reproduction of a Victorian 3D Christmas card. I bring it out every year :-) Thank you all for your very kind comments on my photos throughout this year. They are much appreciated and I wish you a HAPPY CHRISTMAS ~ See you again in 2023.

Bell Street ~ Shaftesbury

A cottage along Bell Street in Shaftesbury, Dorset. I think the straw animals on the ridge of this thatch are cats!

Whitby ~ North Yorkshire

06 Dec 2022 34 42 184
Back to Whitby today, where there are many jewellers selling Whitby Jet jewellery. Jet is a semi-precious gemstone made from decaying wood under extreme pressure. It's a type of coal-substance that washes up on the beaches of Whitby and also found in the North York Moors that's approximately 182 million years. Jet has also been found in Kimmeridge shale seams in Dorset. The giant herring suspended above the shop is an installation on the heritage trail by Whitby artist Emma Stothard.

A close-up from one of the Christmas trees in Stourhead House. This one was decorated with beautiful old Christmas cards.

Stourhead House - Bearback Riding

Stourhead House is looking good inside, with many of their rooms having Christmas trees and other very tasteful decorations. The PiP shows the bigger view of the main picture.

HFF Everyone.

Burton Agnes Hall ~ Yorkshire

Back to Yorkshire for this Elizabethan stately home. Burton Agnes Hall is in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It has been lived in by the same family for 400 years. The house and gardens are open to the public. The statue in front of the house is just listed as statue of a warrior.

The Lost Portrait

27 Nov 2022 23 40 143
On Friday I visited the Russell Cotes Museum in Bournemouth, for a talk by Charles Dickens' great great great granddaughter, Lucinda Hawksley, called "Dickens and Christmas". I knew nothing about the lost portrait, which shows him when he was much younger than the usual picture we see when he was in his mid 50's and looking even older. The story is very interesting and if you wish to know more I will leave a link. The portrait was a miniature by Scottish artist Margaret Gillies. The 2nd PiP shows Lucinda Hawksley book signing. The main picture is best NOT viewed large, as it was taken from a screen showing the slide. www.bbc.com/culture/article/20191220-the-lost-portrait-of-charles-dickens

Montacute House

26 Nov 2022 32 60 182
I have often read that there is a perfect light of the "golden hour" for photos, which lasts for about an hour after sunrise and an hour right before sunset when the sun is low in the sky. Well, I hit one of these with my main picture just as the sun was going down. The second shot in PiP was taken many hours after sunrise, and the difference in colour and light of the two is quite striking. The true colour of the stone is more like the main shot.

A Drunken Night!

24 Nov 2022 42 54 215
A little display and story being told in the stables at Montacute House, of the grooms/stable lads drunken night! The PiP shows a film in silhouette behind the bars with sound and movement on a reel.

Montacute

22 Nov 2022 43 70 211
Away from the formal gardens around Montacute House, there are many secluded nooks like the ones pictured here, and as they are sheltered they have retained their autumn leaves for a little longer. In fact, most of them are quite green still.
