St Nicholas Church, Moreton, Dorset ~ Due to the current regulations, we were not able to go inside the church, which is the best place to view the beautiful windows. They were hand etched by Laurence Whistler and took 30 years to complete. I was only able to get one good window picture (in PiP) because of the light and sloping ground, but they are all spectacular.

The Walled Garden re-opened to the public in May 2015, having undergone significant replanting and restoration since then. A wide variety of perennial plants sit in the boarders, which have been styled in original Georgian and Victorian designs. For the past 3 years, these have been planted and cared for by Head Gardener Tim and his team, including students with learning disabilities and Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) to develope vital skills, expertise and confidence (Employ my Ability).

Moreton has become well-known because of its association with T. E. Lawrence, also known as Lawrence of Arabia. T. E. Lawrence lived near to Moreton when he served at Bovington Camp and was later buried in Moreton Church Yard. Every year thousands of visitors are drawn to Moreton to visit his grave, which backs onto The Walled Garden. Many visitors also visit the village to see the Church’s unique engraved glass windows by poet and artist Sir Laurence Whistler.
walledgardenmoreton.co.uk ......"Employ My Ability" is based at The Walled Garden, Moreton: Our unique environment hosts hospitality, horticultural and retail facilities that help students with learning disabilities and Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) develop vital skills, expertise and confidence. We offer strong vocational qualifications alongside real, hands-on work experience which enables our students to leave us with a clear pathway into employment within the local community.

St Nicholas Church, Moreton, Dorset ~ Two PiP's.....One showing the church, which I have posted before but promised to take a picture of the controversial window when I visited again. It depicts Judas, the betrayer of Christ, the disciple who the gospels relate hanged himself in shame after throwing away the 30 pieces of silver he was paid for his treachery.
It is the creation of the glass artist Laurence Whistler, and it was finally installed 14 years after Whistler's death and almost 30 years after the parishioners, appalled at the subject and the strangeness of the image, rejected his valuable gift.
The window cannot be viewed from inside the church. The dark window is more startling because the interior of the church is flooded with light. All the clear glass windows are the spectacular work of Whistler, depicting butterflies, birds, rabbits, wild flowers, candles, stars and planets and local scenes.

Moreton, Dorset ~ One of the most beautiful churches I have visited with the biggest attraction being the exquisite windows engraved by Laurence Whistler over the period of 1958-1984. T.E.Lawrence, also known as Lawrence of Arabia is buried in the churchyard.
