Photo taken by my father-in-law aboard the "Landing Ship Dock" USS Catamount, LSD 17, 1945 in the Pacific. Once loaded, the well was pumped out for transit and refilled for disembarking.

U.S. Marines attending to their equipment en route to their next mission. Tanken by my father-in-law, one of the ship's officers. The LSD (Landing Ship Dock) was a transport ship with a large open well that ran most of the length of the center of the ship. Landing craft were loaded in the dry well for transport. When ready to deploy the landing craft, the well was flooded, a gate at the aft of the ship opened and the landing craft with their Marines and equipment would power out to the open water.Submitted for the "Soldiers" theme in the Vintage Photos Theme Park. Marines do not like to be referred to as soldiers. They are Marines, I apologize for any offense.

Assault landing craft, each holding a Marine tank and equipment, inside the well of LSD (Landing Ship Dock), Catamount. En route to support the expected assault on the Japanese home islands, Marines are busy doing maintenance as curious sailors observe. For the Vintage Photos Theme Park NUMBER(S) IN A PHOTO theme. My father-in-law's ship and I suspect he is the photographer.

It appears a sailor is running a gauntlet of fellow crewmen for some unknown reason. Some of the sticks/clubs being employed look lethal. Submitted to the Vintage Photos Theme Park for the monthly theme, TRAINS, PLANES, SHIPS, AND BUSES (people photographed traveling inside one of these modes of transport--preferably shot from the inside).
