Compare: VAB crawlerway, 1965 and 2009

The image on the left is scanned from a slide my grandparents shot while driving around Cape Canaveral/Kennedy Space Center in early 1965. The picture on the right was taken on August 7, 2009 from roughly the same location (perhaps a little closer in). Note that in the picture on the left, the apparently still-under-construction crawler is parked on the crawlerway, in front of the two VAB highbays used for storage and the hurricane safe haven today. Out of frame to the right of the "today" picture are OPF 1 and 2, the conjoined building where Orbiters are refurbished between flights.

The picture on the right was taken on August 7, 2009 from roughly the same location (about 10 yards back), showing the area as it looks today (the wider angle of the photo on the right is indicated by the desaturated area).

Parked at the pad, having just delivered Discovery.

The metal-reinforced concrete surface the crawler travels over when it drives up to the pad.

Crawler and Rocket Row

Looking back down the crawlerway, with LC-41, LC-40, and LC-37 visible in the distance.

Vehicle Assembly Building

As seen from the crawlerway. The two high bays visible on this side are those primarily used for Shuttle stack operations. Ares I-X is currently being assembled in the one on the left, and Discovery was rolled out of the one on the right a day or two before this picture was taken. The high bays on the opposite side are used as a "safe haven" where a Shuttle can be parked in the event of a hurricane rollback from the pad if the other two high bays are in use, and as storage/staging for external tanks and SRB segments.

Treadmarks

Looking back down the crawlerway towards the VAB. The marks on the crawlerway are fresh, Discovery having been moved to the pad just a day or so earlier.
